Mayans M.C. preview: EZ’s fate hangs in the balance
EZ’s fate hangs in the balance as Lincoln Potter tightens his noose and demands a sacrifice on the season finale of Mayans M.C.
Well, the finale of Mayans M.C. is here, but don’t expect Kurt Sutter to give us a happy ending, folks.
After a season filled with heartbreak, betrayal, murder, and shady dealings, the show isn’t done putting some of its main characters through the wringer before the credits close on episode 10, “Cuervo/Tz’ikb’uul.”
Last week, we witnessed the rise of Lincoln Potter. The District Attorney was a thorn in the side of the original Sons of Anarchy crew, but on Mayans, he’s posing even more of a threat. Potter revealed EZ’s double dealings to brother Angel, causing a rift between the Reyes siblings, and forcing both men to do his bidding or face the wrath of the club.
He also left EZ with a terrible dilemma: kill his former handler or risk exposure and more prison time.
EZ’s done some questionable things this season. He helped Coco’s daughter cover up a murder. He helped Coco dispose of his mother’s body. He’s cleaned up massacres, gone on drug deals, and been complicit in the kidnapping of a child. All this to say, EZ’s no angel, but despite having killed a police officer back in the day, pre-meditated murder just doesn’t seem like something the well-meaning prospect is capable of.
And yet, haven’t we been building to this all season?
Sutter’s spent 10 episode slowly corrupting his main hero, showing the lengths he’s willing to go to for his family and friends. Considering his love for complex anti-heroes, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see EZ wield the gun against an innocent man.
What will be interesting is to see how this entire ordeal affects EZ.
He’s been spurned by his former love, he’s been exposed as a liar to his brother, he’s discovered his father’s secret life, and now he’s left to clean up his mess seemingly on his own. As flawed as EZ is, at his core, he’s a good guy. Will that change after he kills again?
Here’s the preview for the season finale of Mayans M.C.:
No matter how the series ends, we’ve got to give Sutter and his team props for their outstanding world-building this season. Following up a show like Sons is a tall order, and creating an entirely new, shared universe only complicates things. The first few episodes of the season felt a bit slow, packed with too much narrative and confusing flashbacks, but by the middle of the season, the show found its stride.
Whatever happens this week, we can all take some comfort in the fact that we’ve already got a season 2 order, which means EZ’s story, and the story of the club, isn’t over yet.
The season finale of Mayans M.C. airs Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 10 p.m. EST.
