Clark Gregg shares Captain Marvel could be Phil Coulson’s ‘first rodeo’

Clark Gregg revealed more about his role as a Phil Coulson in Captain Marvel, and it’s got us excited to see what the young character will look like.

Out of all the characters revealed in Entertainment Weekly’s big Captain Marvel first look, Phil Coulson was not one of the characters we got to see. That’s still not stopping Clark Gregg from teasing a bit more about the movie, and letting us learn more about what his young character will be like.

Speaking to EW for the Captain Marvel issue, Gregg was able to tell us what to look forward to with Coulson in SHIELD during the ’90s — and let’s just say, we hope we won’t cringe too much.

“He’s a relatively new SHIELD agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Director Fury so angry,” Gregg joked in the interview. “The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”

That one slip — “Director Fury” — does have us wondering if Gregg meant to call him plain old “Fury,” seeing as he would still be in the early stages of his career at SHIELD. EW confirmed this in the current story, and also revealed this in a profile with Samuel L. Jackson just last week.

Carrying through with his good humor, the Agents of SHIELD actor also talked about being asked to come back on screen for this film.

“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks,” he said in the story. “I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded!

So it looks like will get two young and naive characters — both Coulson and Fury — in this movie. Okay, the two might not necessarily be naive, but they’ll certainly have a thing or two to learn in this movie. According to the article, Coulson doesn’t even know that there are creatures and other races outside of Earth. And the Kree-Skrull war might just be a rude awakening for him. But knowing that he’s still Phil Coulson, who eventually shoots Loki, this war shouldn’t scare him off too easily.

Of course, Gregg had to throw back to his line in the Avengers when he told Tony Stark that was his first rodeo. We speculated a few months ago that Captain Marvel could be his “first rodeo,” and now Gregg sort of has an answer to that question.

“This might be the rodeo,” he said. Or at least, “It’s one of them, for sure.”

Captain Marvel hits theaters March 2019. And since it’s been a week since EW first showed off the new images, we think we’re long overdue for a trailer. Shall we expect a teaser next week?
