Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer solidifies movie’s place on MCU timeline

An Ant-Man and the Wasp TV spot has confirmed where the movie sits on the MCU timeline. Things are still a bit muddled in the timeline, but it clarifies a lot.

It’s time to place Ant-Man and the Wasp on the confusing MCU timeline. We’re feeling assured that the producers don’t just throw a dart at the timeline to decide that’s when the next movie should take place. It looks like things are a little bit more planned out.

Today, that’s become clearer with one single line from one of the latest Ant-Man and the Wasp TV spots. Before, we knew that — given the events of Infinity War — it was only logical for the Ant-Man sequel to take place after Captain America: Civil War and before Infinity War. But how long after? Two years, to be precise.

In the TV spot, we see Randall Park’s character Jimmy Woo question Scott Lang about what he’s been up, seemingly during an investigation of some sorts.

“Two years under house arrest,” he says. “You haven’t had any contact with Hank or Hope have you?” Woo asks Scott.

And there you have it. Marvel soothed a lot of worrying souls in just one line before the movie even came out. But what does that mean for the rest of the MCU now that we know about this movie’s place on the timeline?

Last week, we discussed the importance of knowing what happens to Ant-Man after Civil War. This TV spot helps to shed some light on those questions. For one, we understand that Scott surely did serve his time under house arrest, just as they said he was doing in Infinity War.

But maybe Scott couldn’t resist stepping out of the house every now and then to suit up. Even though he was supposed to stay in, from the trailer, it looks like Scott will feel the itch in this movie to become Ant-Man again and fight alongside Hope.

This also seems to confirm that Ant-Man and the Wasp will for sure take place seemingly close to Infinity War. If Infinity War is understood to take place in 2018 (thanks to some math done by the folks at Polygon), then those “two years” should equate to Ant-Man and the Wasp taking place in 2018 as well. We can kiss that confusing “eight years later” caption from Spider-Man: Homecoming goodbye.

If only the TV spot told us the month, the day and the hour, we’d for sure know just how far out Ant-Man and the Wasp is from the events in Infinity War. It’s just too bad all that’s likely to get tossed in the trash once things start going haywire in Avengers 4
