Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Is Coulson the key to survival?
As Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD sends us back into alien warfare, is Coulson the key to breaking the loop? Or is he a hindrance to the team?
There’s a lot of stuff going on in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. We may or may not be stuck in a time loop. The world may or may not get quaked apart and it may or may not be by Daisy.
And our team still continues to flip-flop on what Coulson’s role is.

I’m not just talking whether he’s leading the team or not. We’ve been told two separate things by two separate people. Future Elena warned our Elena that the world ends because the team tries to save Coulson. Robin tells us Coulson is the key to fitting together all the puzzle pieces.
So which one is it?
It’s a little hard to tell with Robin since she has so many visions and they don’t come in chronological order. But her clues and snippets have always been accurate. And that’s a little harrowing and haunting. Has a vision ever faltered? Or led them astray? It’s easier to argue against her if that’s the case.
On the flip side of the coin, the future Elena we saw had been beaten, tortured, killed, and revived over and over again for 80 years. That’s a lot to survive and keep your wits about you. It is always possible that future Elena focused on one small part of why they failed and blowing it out of proportion.
So it really feels like keeping Coulson alive might not be the thing that ends the world.
This could very much be a case where Coulson figures out how to break the time loop… but to do so, the world needs to quake apart one more time. Knowing how Agents of SHIELD likes to jerk us around, this is probably the case.
The question still remains: When will Coulson fit all of those puzzle pieces together?
