How Avengers: Infinity War gets us excited for Captain Marvel
By Buckie Wells
Although Avengers: Infinity War may have ended on a sad note, the end-credits sequence at least gave us something marvel-ous to look forward to!
Before we dive into the ending of Avengers: Infinity War, here’s your Spoiler Warning. If you haven’t seen the film, don’t continue, because every surprise is worth waiting for to see in the theater.
Anyone who’s seen Avengers: Infinity War yet, knows it’s a game-changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The stakes are higher than ever before, and Marvel delivers on its promise that certain things will end. However, there are plenty of things to remind us that a lot of the damage Thanos committed won’t be permanent.
At the end of the film, Thanos managed to wipe out half of the universe after getting his hands on each of the six Infinity Stones. Although he admits it cost him everything, the end-credits (literally at the very end of the film) gave us some hope — well, superficial cinematic hope, since we all know the MCU isn’t about to permanently delete one of its most prominent characters right now, (e.g. Black Panther.)
Right before Nick Fury was swept away from existence, he managed to shoot off a message using an old space beeper. Based on the image we saw, we know the message was received — by none other than Carol Danvers, a.k.a., Captain Marvel. Of course, we didn’t see her name, but we did see the Kree Halostar and her signature colors. As far as pagers are concerned, that’s an unusual way to show that a message was received, but we’ll take it anyway.
Captain Marvel will be set in the ’90s, and we know that Nick Fury will be there. They obviously have a history together. So far, we don’t know exactly why she left. But we’ll likely see the moment when she gives Nick Fury the space pager seen in Infinity War.
From the set photos, it looks like Captain Marvel will be saving two-eyed Nick more than a few times.
What this means for Avengers 4
Unfortunately, Thanos all but decimated the Avengers. Even though Thor, Captain America and Iron Man survived, they each paid a terrible price and ultimately lost the battle.
Luckily, Kevin Feige already stated, “All of the Marvel characters have flaws to them, all of them have a deep humanity to them. With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we’ve ever put in a movie. Her powers are off the charts, and when she’s introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we’ve ever had.”
Even with the forces of Wakanda, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Avengers couldn’t defeat Thanos. Once Captain Marvel comes around, expect her to come in and save the day. (Maybe someone will even reverse time?) If her powers are off the charts, she will likely be the only contender for Thanos.
Additionally, Captain Marvel will also be another powerful woman to balance out the squad. We need that since Black Widow can only do so much, and Gamora is no longer a part of the equation. Further, none of the current female characters have enjoyed the same character development as the male heroes. So Captain Marvel’s solo film is long overdue. And it will be interesting to see how Marvel — and the film’s directors — do it.

Brie Larson will debut as Captain Marvel in her solo film on March 8, 2019. Two months later, Avengers 4 comes out as a sequel to Infinity War. Both films were shot back-to-back.
Hopefully, Marvel won’t underestimate Captain Marvel’s appeal in the same way they did Black Panther’s. For a movie that made a billion dollars and became one of the MCU’s biggest hits practically overnight, unfortunately, we didn’t see a lot of Wakanda or its king in Infinity War.
