Tom Holland says he practices his American accent every day… even in the shower

To prepare for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War, Tom Holland revealed he practiced his American accent every day, even when he hit the showers.

There’s no shame in having some of the best karaoke moments in the shower. The acoustics are always great in there. But there’s also no shame in practicing your American accent if you’re a British actor starring in the biggest Marvel films.

That’s kind of specific, but Avengers: Infinity War’s Tom Holland revealed that’s just what he does to prepare for his movies. The actor spoke to E! News with co-star Benedict Cumberbatch at his side, explaining how he prepares for the superhero films.

To keep that American accent pristine, Holland said that he pretty much has to practice every day. Yes, even in the shower. It’s not as weird as you might think, though.

“I always have to practice my American accent. I do it every day in the shower,” Holland said. “I shower in American, just so I’m ready.”

Pure, innocent Tom Holland was asked to demonstrate how a shower like that would go. Yet, we knew something like that wasn’t going to happen. Let’s keep it PG on these interviews, folks.

To make up for the awkward moment, Holland went on to demonstrate how flawlessly he can go back and forth between sounding American and speaking in his natural British accent. Cumberbatch complimented him on how spot-on his accent was, even though Cumberbatch himself isn’t American. (We’ll reserve our own judgments for Cumberbatch’s American accent as Strange for now.)

The Spider-Man actor did reveal that he has some slip-ups if he doesn’t use his American accent for a while. Like, he might say that he’s going back to his “flat” instead of “apartment.” Even with that tiny mistake, his accent is still near perfect.

Even co-star Robert Downey Jr. had to hand it Holland during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel LiveHe praised the star for not only doing an American accent well but doing a hyperlocalized one that one would hear from the Forest Hills area of Queens, New York.

It’s no doubt that Tom Holland’s got this whole accent thing figured out. You can hear more of Spider-Man’s splendidly perfect Americanized voice in Avengers: Infinity War, out now.
