Are you still thinking about seeing Avengers: Infinity War, or do you already have your tickets purchased? This massive Marvel movie is likely to make a big splash, not least because it seems like every single superhero ever seen on screen is going to be there.
Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it really does look like a fair number of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) people are going to be there. There’s a bearded Captain America, genius billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark (aka Iron Man), and alien god Thor, to begin with. Even the Guardians of the Galaxy, the roguish superhero team who had previously been sequestered to space, will join in.
What kind of force will make all of these bickering superheroes and at least one smart-talking raccoon join together? Oh, nothing more than the very embodiment of death.
What’s the deal with Thanos?
That might be overstating it somewhat, given that big bad Thanos is more properly described as a despotic villain who is thoroughly devoted to death. He’s been built up over many years now, appearing in several of the end and mid-credits scenes that are now de rigueur for Marvel films.
Previously, Thanos did little more than act menacingly and float around in space while the main action was going on elsewhere. Now, however, he’s set to take on a much more involved role. That’s because he’s about to collect all of the Infinity Stones. Remember that mega-powerful rock in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie? The one that blew up the Collector’s fancified junk shop? That’s just one of them.
Now, imagine all six Infinity Stones put together. That should be pretty terrifying, and Thanos agrees. He even has an Infinity Gauntlet with six settings, all ready to go and help him wreak havoc once complete. This definitely sounds like an occasion for throwing all of your superheroes at a single, massive threat.
Whether you’ve seen the Infinity War film or not, it’s possible that you’re interested in the wider themes of weird galactic threats and spacefaring heroes.
