Relax, Netflix has finally renewed One Day At A Time for season 3
Critics and fans alike have been calling for a third season of Netflix’s One Day At A Time, a Cuban-American family sitcom, since the second season debuted.
Finally, after three months of begging, Netflix has finally announced that we will get to see more of the Alvarez family in 2019. Yes, One Day at a Time is officially coming back for a third season!
For a moment there, it didn’t look so great.
Even actors and crewmembers, like producer Mike Royce, were begging fans to go watch a few episodes so it would get renewed.
It will be another 13-episode third season, produced by Sony Pictures TV, and there’s no limit to what could happen in this wonderful show. One Day At A Time is a reimagining of the late 1970s Norman Lear sitcom by the same name, but there’s nothing dated about this hilarious, heartbreaking show. The National Hispanic Media Coalition called the show “a guiding light – the true north in and for an industry grappling with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusivity.”
The last two seasons of the Emmy-nominated show have dealt with so many difficult topics, from coming out as queer, to deciding to go to therapy and get medicated for mental illnesses, to dealing with the realities for many minorities in a Trump world, to dating as a middle-aged mother. I personally cannot wait to see what the fantastic showrunners, writers and cast have in store for viewers next.
As far as what they have planned, showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellet talked about it in the New York Times:
"Well, we have a few things built in already. Penelope is in school, so she still will be in school, or maybe graduate. We get to see her journey to being a nurse practitioner. Seeing what else is out there for her dating life as well. Deepening Elena’s relationship. Maybe Alex will get to have a little love in his life. And of course, we’ll be taking into consideration what’s happening in the next month or two months from now. The news is crazy."
Next: One Day at a Time’s Todd Grinnell is not Paul Rudd, but he’s still super cute
I’m personally hoping to see Elena find some friends outside of Syd and continue their activism together. I’d love to see more of Alex’s life as he grows into himself. I’m also interested to see where the relationship goes between Lydia and Dr. Berkowitz.
