Image Comics really does seem to have cornered the market on strange, yet funny comic books. They’ve published God Hates Astronauts and Skullkickers, along with more serious yet critically acclaimed work like Saga. Image also publishes The Walking Dead, the longstanding comics series that preceded your favorite zombie TV show.

But, they have at least one more weird humor comic up their sleeve. Let’s take a look at Chew.

Chew follows the exploits of Tony Chu (of course), a police detective turned FDA agent who is a Cibopath. Don’t you know what that is? In Chew, a Cibopath is a very particular kind of psychic who can take a bite of something and get a sense of what has happened to that object. Except for beets. Tony Chu and his fellow Cibopaths just can’t seem to get a read on beets. They can also take on some of the skills of something or someone, a handy if gruesome ability.

In Tony’s world, all bird meats, including chicken, are outlawed after a catastrophic outbreak of bird flu kills 23 million people. When investigating a possible case of illegal chicken soup, Chu realizes that the cook involved has been murdering people. In order to follow the case, he has to consume an increasingly gross number of things, including the cook’s tongue.

This is yet another series that requires a solid constitution of its readers, as if that weren’t already obvious. However, as gross as Tony’s Cibopath powers might be, his adventures are also strangely funny.

That includes other strange powers in his world, including someone who is a Cibolocutor (someone who can communicate words through food), a Effervenductor (someone who uses foams to mind-control people), and a Xocoscalpere (who can sculpt chocolate — seriously, just chocolate — to lifelike accuracy).

So, have you decided to give Batman a break yet?
