Doctor Who reveals updated logo, brand new image for season 11
By Lacy Baugher
It’s months before we’ll see Doctor Who Season 11 on our screens. But Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteen already has a brand new logo to go with her debut.
Lots of change is headed our way this year, Doctor Who fans.
There’s a brand new season coming this fall. For the first time, a woman will pilot the TARDIS, as Jodie Whittaker officially takes over as the series’ first female Doctor. Chris Chibnall will assume the duties of showrunner and head writer. Three new companions — Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole — will join the TARDIS crew. Season 11 will be a bit shorter than usual (only 10 installments) and it might change nights entirely. Whew.
And that’s not even all.
The series logo is also officially changing, as of right now. Yes, really.
At BBC Worldwide’s annual showcase in Liverpool, the corporation released an updated version of the Doctor Who logo and a brand new image of star Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. The new logo isn’t that weird — the series’ logos, fonts and opening credits change around quite a bit over the years, usually when Doctors regenerate. (See most recently: The more steam punk-ish version used during the Peter Capaldi era that featured lots of gears and Roman numerals.)
The new logo launched with a 10-second animation, which depicts a tiny TARDIS zooming through the now-golden letters of the Doctor Who logo, and it looks quite a bit different from the version which last graced the Moffat era. (There’s also a pronounced absence of clocks this time around.) However, the finished product looks rather lovely — simultaneously familiar, yet different enough to be intriguing.
Sadly, the music featured in this clip isn’t the new version of Doctor Who theme. Digital Spy confirmed with the BBC that this arrangement is a piece of music used especially for this animation and created by Matthew Herbert.
The corporation also released some new key art for the sci-fi series. And it doesn’t look much like anything that came before it. The insignia omits the “Doctor” part of the show’s title entirely, choosing to go with just “WHO” instead.
Why? That’s not clear. (You’d think that in a season that’s already undergoing so much massive change, they might want to hold on to obvious things like show titles in the key art, but what do I know. Prove me wrong, Chibnall.)

If that wasn’t enough, BBC even dropped a brand new image featuring Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor.
She’s in silhouette with the TARDIS in the distance, which sadly means no new costume tidbits for us. (Boooooo.) But the overall effect is one of beauty, color and change. A new day is, quite literally, dawning in this photo. And on Doctor Who itself. It’s impossible to not get excited about that.
