A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2: 6 things we’d like to see this season

The second season of A Series of Unfortunate Events is coming to Netflix in March, and we’re hoping it includes at least a few of these things.

Whether you grew up reading Lemony Snicket’s book series, or you simply stumbled upon the television show on Netflix, it’s hard to contain the excitement of having another season of A Series of Unfortunate Events on the way. Thankfully, we won’t need to wait long for Count Olaf’s latest attempts to steal the Baudelaire fortune.

Netflix recently announced that the second season of A Series of Unfortunate Events will stream on March 30, 2018. With this announcement came a teaser trailer, promising worse things on the horizon for Violet, Klaus and Sunny. It’s hard to imagine these three could get any unluckier, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Apart from an increase in misfortune, fans are left to wonder what else the second season has in store. Here are some of the things we’d most like to see once the new episodes are released.

More of Count Olaf’s ridiculous disguises

What would this series be without Count Olaf? Played by Neil Patrick Harris, Olaf attempted to steal the Baudelaire orphans’ fortune on more than one occasion during season 1. Each time he popped up, it was with a clever new disguise. And while the orphans saw right through these, most of the show’s adults remained oblivious.

It’s likely that Olaf will continue to pursue the children using his fabricated identities. We can only hope they’re as hysterical as the previous ones. It’ll be hard to top Stephano, but we have complete faith in NPH.

Answers regarding their parents’ deaths

The series began with the three Baudelaire children receiving the terrible news that their parents and house perished in a fire. This sends them into a spiral of … well, unfortunate events. But the show frequently hints that there’s more to this event than meets the eye.

For starters, there are unusual connections between Count Olaf, the show’s narrator and the Baudelaires. Whatever relationship existed between them is covered up for the sake of suspense, but we’re hoping to see exactly what the purpose of these connections is. Hopefully, the second season will be more forthcoming about the events leading up to the fateful fire as well.

An explanation for the “other parents”

The first season of A Series of Unfortunate Events led viewers astray, following the story lines of a couple that seemed at first glance to be Mr. and Mrs. Baudelaire. Yet at the very end, these two characters turned out to be people we’d never met or heard of before. This makes you wonder why the writers would spend so much time building up their story arc.

To make matters more bizarre, the end of season 1 also shows these two reuniting with their family. And their family bears a lot of similarities to the Baudelaire family.

The significance of these characters has yet to be unraveled, but we’re hoping to see more of them in the upcoming season. The new episodes may explain their connection to the Baudelaires, as well as their reason for having to fight their way back to their family.

New inventions by Violet

Violet (Malina Weissman) has a tendency to save her siblings from dangerous situations using her quick wit and affinity for inventing things. If their circumstances are truly to get worse this season, it’s likely she’ll have some new creations up her sleeve.

Half the fun of watching this series is seeing how the Baudelaire orphans manage to escape the impossible situations they’re put in. We’re looking forward to watching the cogs in Violet’s mind turn as she maneuvers her way out of whatever trouble arises this season.

Larger roles for the Poe family

In the first season, Mr. Poe (K. Todd Freeman) was charged with finding a permanent guardian for the Baudelaire children. If you’ve been watching the series, you’ll know that that is no easy feat. It doesn’t help that Poe repeatedly fell for Olaf’s disguises, but his intentions were genuine. And he’ll probably get another chance to find the orphans a new home in season 2.

We were also introduced to Mrs. Poe (Cleo King) toward the end of the first season, a kind (and slightly more competent) adult figure for the Baudelaires. She added an adult perspective to the show, one that was actually down to earth.

Both of these characters needed more screen time in season one, and we’re crossing our fingers that season 2 gives it to them. Between Mr. Poe’s bumbling humor and Mrs. Poe’s unexpected normalcy, it’ll be a wonder if we don’t see more of them.

Another Daniel Handler cameo

For those that don’t know don’t know the man behind the pen, Daniel Handler is Lemony Snicket’s true identity. And readers were delighted to discover that the brain behind this series appeared in the first season of the Netflix adaptation. Sure, he was only a Fish Head Salesperson. That just makes his appearance more entertaining.

If Handler does show up during the second season, it’ll be interesting to see which background character he tackles next. Hopefully, it’ll look as fabulous on his CV as Fish Head Salesperson does.

Happiness for the Baudelaire orphans

This one’s probably a long shot. After all, this goes against the very premise of the show. Still, it would be nice to see Violet, Klaus, and Sunny get the happy ending they deserve.

Netflix did confirm a third and final season of the series, so it’s probable that any optimistic ending would occur then. But we can cross our fingers, against all odds, that our three beloved siblings find a smidgen of joy before then.
