New Tomb Raider trailer showcases who Lara Croft is ‘meant to be’
By Buckie Wells
With new music, new scenes and a clearer sense of where the story is going, the new Tomb Raider trailer is everything Lara Croft fans could want.
Like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, I’m sure Alicia Vikander’s Oscar win helped her get this role. Unfortunately, that doesn’t translate to big box office numbers, and 2018 is preparing to roll out a ton of big blockbusters this year. When the competition gets stiff, a film has to rely on quality filmmaking in hopes that they can win the audience over. Then, by good word of mouth, the money rolls in.
In Tomb Raider‘s case, Warner Bros. has tried to get their Oscar winner as close to the source material as possible. To give credit where it’s due, last year’s Wonder Woman proved that they can put out a good action flick with a female lead. Of course, most people are going to be wary of this, since good video game adaptations are hard to come by, but Tomb Raider‘s new trailer should put a lot of those worries to rest.
Because it looks amazing.

Of course, you can see why having someone like Alicia Vikander as your lead is such a necessary ingredient here. She’s meant to be vulnerable and open right up until the moment where she’s pushed to the edge and evolves into someone a little more fierce as her survival instincts kick in. That’s not to say she can’t be vulnerable and badass at the same time, but if you watch Vikander’s expressions during some of those amazing action shots, it’s clear that compassion gets (rightfully) pushed to the back of her mind.
Because Lara Croft has always been multi-faceted and the newer games have strived to make her more nuanced and capable than just a tomb raiding sex symbol, Vikander looks almost perfect here. I mean, as a fan of the games, the small details, like her climbing axe, are welcome. But her proficiency with a bow and arrow, and more importantly, upper arm strength make the character who she really is.

Let it be known: if this movie can be as good as this trailer looks, live-action Lara Croft as played by Alicia Vikander will be right up there with Star Wars‘ Rey in my book.
Tomb Raider opens in theaters on March 16, 2018.
