Game of Thrones season 8: Will Davos Seaworth survive?

Game of Thrones season 8 contains the last chances for those shocking deaths for which the show has become known. Is Davos Seaworth on the chopping block?

Even though Game of Thrones fans have managed to figure out a few things about season 8 as a whole, one thing that still remains a complete and total unknown is who will be left standing at the end of the series. We all have our theories, of course — yours truly included — but with Liam Cunningham’s recent comments to RTÉ, it’s time to make our guesses about Davos Seaworth’s survivability.

As a character, Davos has a particular knack for surviving things. It’s how he earned his knighthood, by smuggling to help others live; he survived the Battle of the Blackwater, even though some of his sons didn’t. When Stannis failed, his Hand and right-hand man lived. That certainly seems to suggest that if Davos does die, it’ll be something ridiculous that probably wipes out multiple main characters, on the level of Cersei’s destroying the Sept of Baelor at the end of season 6.

He himself said he merely wants “to make it to the last episode,” which doesn’t necessarily exclude Davos becoming a last-hour death to just remind fans one last time that no one is safe on Game of Thrones, even when you might think that they are.

Naturally, our hearts want Davos to survive. He’s the kind of character you find easy to relate to because while others are making bonkers proclamations, he’s got his own tricks to get through the day. He’s not always aiming to be clever like Tyrion; he’s about as down-to-earth as it gets in the show.

But that’s what also makes him a pretty decent last-minute death. The show pretty clearly wants to go out with a bang — hence the delay to 2019 — and it’s hard to deny that Davos’ death would not count as a bang. All we’re hoping is that whatever happens, it’s a way that makes our hearts break for him instead of just a cheap death.

We’re not hoping he gets burned to death like Shireen, though. We can only handle one of these things per series.
