Does Riverdale season 2 really need Sabrina the Teenage Witch?

Hints continue to float around that Sabrina the Teenage Witch of Greendale might appear in Riverdale season 2, but does the show really need her?

The idea that Riverdale might take a leaf out of The CW’s current longest-running show’s book and get a little supernatural in its second season continues to persist. At first, the thought was that the undead might appear in “the town with pep!”, but now io9 has perpetuated the idea that it might be Sabrina who makes things a little weirder in season 2, based on a suspicious post from Dove Cameron.

(As io9 also notes that Cameron’s best-known for her roles in the Descendants movies, please insert your jokes about Riverdale becoming the home for Disney Channel stars looking to expand their brand. Hey, it’s worked for Cole Sprouse this far, right?)

Archie Comics’ official Twitter account certainly hasn’t made things clearer, either:

But could Riverdale actually made better by magic? It’s not as though Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa doesn’t know his way around the character — he’s behind Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which happens to also include some appearances from Veronica and Betty, as I noted in that review. Of course, the show doesn’t have to make her an actual witch with powers.

However, the show has had a few odd occurrences around the edges here and there. The first season never said magic wasn’t real, but it didn’t really confirm its existence, either, outside of some incidents with Nana Blossom. Adding in actual witch Sabrina could upset the balance of the show, even if it’s a secret that she has powers, as it typically is. For all its twists and turns, Riverdale is a human drama so far.

Adding in non-actual-witch Sabrina would be a different story. Even so, if she’s not a real witch … is she really Sabrina, then?

Next: Why did Class fail?

Perhaps her arrival caps off season 2 and sends things into season 3, should we be so lucky as to get a season 3. For now, though, it would need a lot of buildup to make sense.
