Star Wars Force Friday ad Targets all Rey fans in new commercial

Sept. 1 marks the launch of Star Wars Force Friday and Target wants you to ‘Bring Your Rey Game’ and visit the retailer for a ton of new The Last Jedi merch.

Boy, retailers are really stepping up their promotional games, huh? The top two chains always going head-to-head seem to know where the pop culture conversation is at at all times. As part of their back to school campaign, Wal-Mart unveiled several new ads that featured DC Comics superheroes (conveniently timed with the success of Wonder Woman). Then, at Target, they’re playing up their big Star Wars card ahead of this Friday’s big event.

On Sept. 1, the annual Force Friday sale begins that will see retailers all around the world unleash all their new lines of Star Wars toys. Of course, a majority of the new merch will include The Last Jedi, the sequel to 2015’s Episode VII: The Force Awakens that introduced the entire world to Rey. In addition to being the main character of the saga films right now, Rey happens to be a very special character for fans because she’s the first female Jedi to be front and center. As the world begs for more female representation, the success of The Force Awakens (as well as Rogue One) marked a step in the right direction.

But considering how difficult it became to find Rey toys after The Force Awakens debuted, it looks like Target won’t be making that mistake this time around. With a little help from Sia’s “Unstoppable,” Target dropped their Rey-centric Force Friday ad that showcases some of the fans’ love for the character.

It’s not just about Star Wars, it’s really a bigger nod at female empowerment and uplifting girls and women to be, well, unstoppable. Most likely, they probably just saw an opportunity for an excellent pun in ‘Bring Your Rey Game’ and just went for it.
