Black Mirror, true crime, and Bourdain’s new doc: Trailer Tuesday

Fall is one of the most exciting times in the entertainment year. New shows hit the streams, new movies throw themselves into award show consideration, and the weather sends us all inside to watch both.

What is it about autumn that makes it so conducive to tuning into a new show or checking out a new movie? There’s the weather, first and foremost — if it’s cold out, a cozy couch and a blanket sounds lot better than braving the elements. Then there’s the fact that award show season is on the horizon. The fall and into winter is generally prestige-looking movie release after prestige-looking movie release as studios gear up for their respective ceremonies. Plus, as school starts back up again and pumpkin spice lattes proliferate the sidewalks, there’s just a feeling of crisp potential. It’s different than the freshness and renewal of spring. This promising aura is more reserved, more mature.

In other words, it’s the perfect season for films and shows like the three below to make their promising debuts.

Wasted! The Story of Food Waste

Release date: Oct. 13

When it comes to wasting food, the U.S. is notorious. As you’ll hear in the trailer for this upcoming documentary featuring star chef Anthony Bourdain, 40 percent of the food produced in America goes to waste. It’s a sobering stat, and one at the heart of what looks to be an eye-opening film. Interviews with scientists, chefs, and other experts break down the issue and the major changes to the food industry that must be made in order for us to tackle it.

Black Mirror season 4

Release date: TBA

All sudden cuts and dramatic flashes, the new trailer for Netflix terrifying Twilight Zone-for-the-modern-day-style anthology series Black Mirror ‘s fourth season is unsettling, to say the least. But, of course, that’s the idea. The trailer reveals the titles of the new season’s six episodes but we don’t have a lot to go on, plot-wise. One’s called “Crocodile.” Another is “Black Museum.” We catch a quick peek of a smirking Friday Night Lights/Breaking Bad/Fargo‘s Jesse Plemmons in the episode entitled “USS Callister,” which appears to have some kind of Star Trek vibe, only, presumably more existentially disturbing. Props to them for keeping with the mysterious spirit they’ve honed so masterfully in the show’s previous three seasons.

Strong Island

Release date: Sept. 15

The heartbreaking story at the center of this Netflix documentary is that of William Ford Jr., a 24-year-old black man killed in 1992. The 19-year-old white man that allegedly killed Ford was never brought to trial after an all-white grand jury didn’t indict. Ford’s brother Yance Ford was behind this project, 10 years in the making, that examines race and the glaring issues with the investigation into William Ford’s death and the justice system as a whole, as well as the devastating impact the entire ordeal had on his family.
