Rick and Morty-inspired McDonald’s Szechuan sauce fetches $15K

McDonald’s has Rick and Morty to thank for turning their limited-time Szechuan sauce into one of pop culture’s most popular and expensive condiments.

After offering up four limited edition bottles of the special Szechuan sauce to fans of the Adult Swim hit Rick and Morty, one of those bottles has made its way to eBay. The final bid was a shocker, raking in more than $15,000 after a bidding war broke out.

While we expected the McDonald’s Schezuan sauce to pull a decent profit in the online auction, the final bid was a complete surprise. With 111 bids for the sweet Mulan-themed McNugget dipping sauce, the final bid was a shocking $15,350.00 according to Nerdist.

Those who haven’t kept up with Rick and Morty may have missed out on Rick’s obsession with the special-flavored McDonald’s sauce. It turns out that Rick takes his nugget dipping very seriously and nothing compares to the tangy, sweet sauce.

During the Season 3 premiere titled “The Rickshank Redemption” back in April, Rick Sanchez ranted to Morty about the importance of the now-sought after sauce.

"“That’s what this is all about Morty. That’s my one-armed man. I’m not driven by avenging my dead family, Morty. That was fake. I’m driven by finding that McNugget sauce. I want that Mulan McNugget sauce Morty. That’s my series arc, Morty. If it takes nine seasons, I want my McNugget dipping sauce…Szechuan sauce Morty. That’s what’s going to take us all the way to the end, Morty…”"

The story behind the Szechuan sauce

After the April 1 episode of Rick and Morty, the Szechuan sauce joke started by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland took off. Fans just wouldn’t let it die and word got all the way back to a McDonald’s executive who commented on Twitter that he’d see what he could do about bringing it back.

It turns out that he had some pulled and the nearly 20-year old promotional sauce was brought back but only for a few special bottles. Right before the official Season 3 premiere on July 30, there was a special giveaway on Twitter.

McDonald’s offered up four 64-ounce bottles of the limited-edition Szechuan sauce to lucky fans. Each bottle came in its own special case that was lined with foam to ensure safe transit and zero spills. The fast food chain even sent a bottle to Justin Roiland to enjoy.

It turns out that one of the lucky winners decided not to enjoy the sauce with his nuggets. Apparently, owning a piece of pop culture history was less important to one man than paying his bills.

Robert Workman won one of the four bottles and decided to cash in instead of keeping it to himself. He listed the special bottle on eBay, figuring that he’d make a few bucks. It’s probably safe to say that Workman didn’t anticipate a bidding war that pushed the price up into the thousands.

There’s no telling what the new owner of the Rick and Morty’s bottle of Szechuan sauce plans to do with it. In addition to dipping it in McNuggets, we’d suggest trying it on fries too.
