Game of Thrones season 7: 3 questions for “The Spoils of War”

Even with photos, Game of Thrones’ fourth episode of season 7 remains a bit of a mystery. Here are three things we want to know.

If you’re a long time Game of Thrones fan, you know that the show usually has three-sentence synopses. In fact, HBO told fans about the first three episodes ahead of time. However, now that we’re into episode 4, we’ve only officially known that it’s called “The Spoils of War” since, well, yesterday. Even with that pile of 10 great photos, we have some lingering questions that the episode will hopefully address.

What is Euron Greyjoy’s plan for Yara Greyjoy?

Prior to episode 3, yours truly suggested that Cersei might try and kill Yara Greyjoy as well as Ellaria Sand. And, since Indira Varma’s sit-down with the official Making Game of Thrones blog talks about “her final scene,” one out of two really isn’t that bad. But Euron doesn’t present Yara to Cersei. Instead, he escorts her out.

Are we going to see what exactly he wants to do with his niece in episode 4? Although neither of them appear in the photos for episode 4, the fact that we see Theon Greyjoy suggests that we might see the rest of the Greyjoys at some point or another in the episode.

Last week, I also compared Euron Greyjoy to the Joker, since actor Pilou Asbæk has talked about not playing the same character twice. However, there’s a healthy dose of cruelty present in his character basically constantly, although it takes plenty of forms. Yara’s collar speaks volumes, but will Euron put on a show with her, or will he do something unwitnessed, as he did to her father?

Whose knife is this, and why are they drawing it?

Digging further into the preview, one shot caught our attention over and over again. At the 16-second mark, you can spot someone drawing a curved dagger. Actually, you’ll hear it, too:

We don’t see this person’s face. All we can spot in terms of clothes are both a yellow undersleeve and a black or very dark gray oversleeve. The hand appears to be that of a man, and he (or she) is wearing a ring.

In the interests of keeping the mystery alive, let’s not take a stab (pun intended) at who it is more than listing the above evidence. But the fact that it’s a dagger rather than a sword suggests something a bit more surreptitious than Brienne swinging her sword around. Is there treachery afoot?

Okay, this is Game of Thrones. There’s always treachery afoot. Perhaps the better question is “What kind of treachery is afoot this time?”

How will Brienne come into play?

In another of the episode 4 photos, we can see Brienne of Tarth. She’s been curiously quiet in the season so far, but she is still up at Winterfell with Sansa. In that photo, she’s wearing leather — I even commented on it.

However, in the preview that came after episode 3, about 22 seconds in, you can spot Brienne apparently in metal armor again, swinging a sword. Earlier in that same preview, it appears that Pod, her squire, hits the ground. This could be something as simple as the two of them running through sparring practice again. Remember, Brienne knows her way around a blade.

But the expression on her face seems more grim. Again, she’s swinging a sword, so we don’t expect a smile or anything, but this seems more serious than her just knocking Pod around again so that he learns how to be a better knight.
