Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are good friends. The last time they worked together was decades ago, on the set of, well, Friends. The two are joining forces once again for a new untitled TV drama with a strong writing and production team.
Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon played each other’s sisters on the long-running NBC hit Friends way back in the day. That was appropriate, seeing as the two became besties right away. After straying from television for a number of years, the two seem enthusiastic about returning to episodic life after it was reported Friday that they’ll be headed back to the small screen together. Aniston has a string of rom-coms behind her, while Witherspoon’s career has been revived by her return to TV, with HBO’s runaway hit Big Little Lies.
While the show is still very much in development, we know that it is going to be a drama centered on the New York morning news scene, as CBS reported. They are apparently shopping it around to the premium networks and streaming services. The Hollywood Reporter caught an early glimpse of the team behind this project. Who they have is already promising: Jay Carson (House Of Cards) is writing, while Steve Kloves (Harry Potter) produces and Michael Ellenberg (HBO) oversees the whole thing.
I personally find this to be very exciting news. I think Witherspoon was amazing in Big Little Lies and Aniston is overdue for a career reboot. I also grew up a Friends fan, but it would be satisfying to see her in something a little more substantial. Aniston has definitely shown off her acting chops over the years, but unfortunately she has yet to find a project since Friends that is truly a hit. As for Witherspoon, let’s hope she keeps riding her sassy little wave post-Lies. The world of daytime television seems like a gold mine of juicy characters that are right in both actresses’ wheelhouse.
