A first-timers guide to D23 Expo

T’was the night before D23 Expo…and hopefully you’re prepared. But just in case, here are a few tips for first timers.

D23 Expo is finally here, and this year is expected to be the best yet. As stars and fans alike head to Anaheim, California for the event, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement – especially if this is your first time attending. You’ve probably heard stories and seen pictures, and hopefully you’ve read D23’s Survival Guide, but there are still some things to know. So, during my first expo, I took notes. With that, here is a supplementary list of everything I wish I knew as a D23 newbie.

Be Social

People from all over the world come to this event. At my first expo, I made a friend from Australia. We bonded over Girl Meets World (may it R.I.P) as we waited to meet the cast. You’re going to be waiting in lines, so take the opportunity to chat with the people around you. It’s a wonderful way to learn more about another culture and see how far Disney truly reaches. You might find a new pen pal. Plus, you’re likely to get some great tips for navigating the expo from veteran attendees. You might even meet a star in disguise.

In 2015, Johnny Depp appeared in Disney’s Live Action movie preview panel, dressed in full Captain Jack Sparrow costume. But he didn’t quit there. After his presentation, he proceeded to walk around the convention in costume, with most people thinking he was just a great cosplayer. Look closely at the costumes you see.

Be Early

Like any convention, there will be massive lines. But at D23 Expo, those lines are exponentially longer, especially for the core panels teasing the movie slates. More importantly, those lines will form even earlier than you expect. When making your schedule for the day, add a solid cushion time before each event you want to see. Especially if you weren’t able to get a StagePass, seats will go quickly. This cushion will also provide much needed time to look at your map and figure out where you’re going.

Be Packed

Bring everything you’ll need for the day. Even if you’re not positive that you’ll need it, bring it. You will use your phone to take every picture you can, as well as use the D23 app, so I advise bringing a portable charger. Two, if you’re really thorough.

The D23 Expo sort of turns you into MacGyver – you’ll find ways to make odd items useful. Case in point: a tennis ball will be a lifesaver. Well, more specifically, a foot saver. When you’re waiting in those lines, use the ball to roll out your feet and you’ll be grateful later. At worst, you can just bounce the ball to kill time.

Some little things to be sure to remember: Sharpie markers, spare socks, and a handheld fan.

Be Rested

There will be so much going on, and so many surprise guests that coming home from D23 Expo is like coming home from a day at the parks: your adrenaline as amped up. Still, it’s key to get a full night of sleep through this weekend.
But most importantly of all…

Be Yourself

For Disney-philes, going to this expo is like going home to the mother ship. You’ll be surrounded by literally thousands of people who love Disney just as much as you do. This is not a time for “conceal, don’t feel.” Feel all the feels.

Let your Disney side show, loud and proud. Freak out over meeting your favorite stars. Don’t be afraid of being judged for your excitement or for wearing a costume. Be yourself and have one of the greatest weekends of your life.
