In years past, the Game of Thrones showrunners have given fans full access to the show’s star-studded season premiere red carpet screening. This year, HBO seems to be a Valyrian steel trap.
Game of Thrones returns on Sunday and it looks like getting a season 7 sneak peek may be trickier this year than it has been previously. While HBO has played up its red carpet event for season premieres past, this year we’re not hearing many details on when or where that normally star-studded screening will take place.
Kit Harington, aka Jon Snow, at least gave us a little hint during his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday night.
Check it out below:
When Kimmel asked Harington whether he’d seen the new season, he played it off like he’s just as in the dark as the rest of us:
"“We don’t see them until you guys will see them. I mean, I’ll see the premiere a few days before you because I’m going down for the premiere on Wednesday.”"
Ah ha! “Going down for the premiere on Wednesday”! A few questions: Down where? Last year’s red carpet event was held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it would be there again this time around. And since we’re not sure if the premiere he’s referring to is in the States or not, Wednesday could mean a couple different things. He could also mean he’s just traveling to the premiere on Wednesday and it’s actually Thursday or even Friday (more likely he means it’s Wednesday but who’s to say?).
We were able to find at least one site that had an actual date and location listed for the premiere and that was If I Was a Stylist, which says the event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 12 in LA. (The site also has some stellar Game of Thrones style insights.)
Last year, HBO streamed the red carpet premiere live from its Game of Thrones Facebook page. Actors and actresses from the show even shared videos encouraging fans to submit their questions for the stars to answer on the red carpet. There’s been no mention of that being planned again but we’re keeping an eye out. Last year, they used the hashtag #GoTPremiereLA, so maybe that’ll be worth trying out on Wednesday?

Harington’s late night appearance did give us a few fun details about other aspects of the show. For instance, he said because of the intense paparazzi presence surrounding this season, the cast and crew actually shot quite a few fake scenes to throw everybody off. Harington claims he was part of three fake shoots that lasted five hours each. If this is true (and Jon Snow has lied to us in the past), then we’re even more in the dark than we thought.
