4. Andie Anderson, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Publication: Composure, a women’s magazine

Backstory: Andie’s assignment is to get a guy to fall for her and then commit enough dating faux pas to get him to break up with her in 10 days, and write about it for the magazine. What she doesn’t know is that her story subject/victim, Ben (Matthew McConaughey), has made a bet with his bosses that he can get a woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. Long story short, they’re both scheming terrible liars, but they do have pretty good chemistry.

Journalistic talent: Like so many movie journalists at women’s magazines, Andie longs to write about more than just shoes and sex positions. Of course, in our more enlightened present day, people are starting to understand that the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. A reporter can care about world issues and about the cutest new mini skirts—it’s what’s so great about what Teen Vogue has been doing and what’s so refreshing about new shows like The Bold Type (more on that later).

It’s another case of a female reporter sleeping with her story subject, first off. Andie’s final article is better than Josie’s, but it’s still not great. She also uses it as an outlet to reach out and apologize to her spurned love interest, to make the big gesture, if you will. Which is sweet and all, but I really don’t see an editor signing off on that taking up valuable page space. Maybe as a Twitter campaign? They can save that for the inevitable reboot.
