SDCC 2017: 3 questions for Marvel’s TV plans

With Marvel’s TV endeavors getting their own announcement for SDCC this year, here’s what we want to know from the panels.

SDCC 2017 already has Warner Bros. Television showing up with its myriad of superhero shows, but today, Marvel struck back with an announcement of its own, which we originally saw at CBR. But rather than just comment on the schedule itself, let’s see what’s there, what’s not there, and what should be there with three questions.

Why isn’t there more on The Punisher?

The Punisher occupies a special place in Marvel and Netflix’s partnership, because it wasn’t part of the original plan. Instead, as Marvel noted when the first official announcement came through last year, it was partially based on fan demand. But Marvel’s schedule only has a signing event for the show, and The Defenders appears to have an event all to itself. Since the show is supposedly coming out in November, wouldn’t it be a good idea to give it some publicity at this massive event?

Of course, there’s room for a surprise, but right now, it seems like Marvel’s not going to give The Punisher some attention.

Will Inhumans look any better with its footage?

Marvel has already started its push to make Inhumans a thing, after dropping a trailer yesterday and then confirming that there’s both a signing and a panel for the show. The latter will even have “exclusive footage” for people to watch. With an IMAX premiere on the way and a lot of hype, Marvel has to make a good impression here, and if fans come out eagerly buzzing about how good it looks, then that’s a win. But if there’s general apathy or even negative reactions, that bodes ill for this third Marvel-ABC effort after the mostly successful Agents of SHIELD and the canceled Agent Carter.

What will we hear about Legion?

Legion occupies a unique place among the Marvel TV series, since it’s the only one currently airing on FX. And it played that to the hilt in the first season, as our recaps attest. The listing doesn’t promise any looks at the show. However, season 2 will come up, so there might be some confirmation of, say, some important cameos. Noah Hawley, one of the show’s executive producers, has already suggested that Professor Xavier might appear in an interview with Deadline. Keep an eye on that one.
