Bad Moms Christmas trailer delivers the best gift of all — Recognition

While straddling Santa and the fine line between sweet and distasteful comedy, last year’s surprise hit Bad Moms returns with A Bad Moms Christmas.

Almost out of nowhere, three comedic actresses who don’t typically do that well at the box office came together and created Bad Moms, which went on to gross a highly-respectable $183.9 million. Last year, Bad Moms did better than highly-buzzed about films like Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck and way, way better than the currently-in-theaters Scarlett Johannson film, Rough Night. Bad Moms‘ success puts it closer to films like Spy and Daddy’s Home.

So, of course, it warranted a sequel. As the highest grossing film for STX Entertainment, it makes all the sense in the world that they’d not only bring back Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, but commit to even bigger named talent.

In this sequel, due for release in November, the moms are back it again. But this time, they’re tackling the holidays with the very poignant question: “But what about mom?” In addition to cooking, cleaning, and shopping for gifts, at Christmastime, moms also bear the brunt of a rather thankless holiday. Which surprisingly makes A Bad Moms Christmas super on brand, despite the amount of swearing in the red band trailer. Though, I provided the cleaner version for you below, if you’re at work.

Check it out:

As Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon and Cheryl Hines (how terrifically well-casted) drop into town to visit their respective daughters, some perspective is forced into play. Baranski, who plays the mother of Kunis’ Amy, earns a wonderful line in the trailer that really sealed the deal for me: “You are a mom. Moms don’t enjoy, they give joy. That’s how being a mom works.”

Obviously, that’s kind of a sad thing to say, if you think about it. Like, if you’re the parent of young children who can’t, at the very least, buy a nice gift, I can understand how hard it must to be get a coupon for a “bad back rub.” I don’t care if it came from the heart or not. The reality is that being a mom is rough, as Bad Moms really strives to drive home. Combined with a masterful level of comedy from each actress, this sequel will probably be even better than the first and prove to be a step in the right direction for the Bad Moms brand.

If it maneuvers the Thanksgiving holiday well enough, hopefully, this movie will prove that we don’t need a “Bad Dads” movie, because those already exist. Seriously, if you’re looking for testosterone, you can see Daddy’s Home 2, another sequel that made a surprising amount of money and will play the grandparents card for laughs with Mel Gibson and John Lithgow.

A Bad Moms Christmas opens in theaters on Nov. 3, 2017.
