Sesame Street has come out with a hilarious snack-centric Orange is the New Black parody just in time for the season 5 premiere.
You know you’ve made it when you get your own Sesame Street parody. And Orange Is The New Black’s “Orange Is The New Snack” is everything.
While we wait for Season 5 of Orange is the New Black to premiere on Friday, Sesame Street has gifted us with this hilarious skit (via ScreenCrush) to hold us over.
And they nailed it. Obviously, they had to make the goings on at Litchfield more kid-friendly, so this skit turned into a valuable lesson on healthy eating for the kids. But adult OITNB fans will love that they included all the characters, uniforms, and even the SHU from the show. Nearly every inmate was accounted for from Piper Snackman to Googly Eyes and we even saw Pornstache become Mr. Mustache.
The parody even begins with an incredible recreation of Regina Spektor’s “You’ve Got Time.” Now, they all have time for snacks. Rather than Piper Chapman becoming a new inmate at Litchfield Correctional Facility, Piper Snackman is a new student at Litchfield Academy. And rather than dealing with contraband and an illegal underwear business, the students at Litchfield Academy have snacks and oranges.
Snackman rejects Red’s cookies and takes out an orange instead. The other students assume is a ball and in true Lorna fashion, she takes the orange and pretends it’s her boyfriend Christopher and marries it.
Finally, Snackman explains that the orange is, indeed, an orange and has her classmates try it. They all, of course, love the healthy alternative to cookies, and Red declares that from now on “Orange is the new snack.”
Throughout the parody Mr. Mustache threatens to send them to the SHU and an increasingly confused Snackman asks what it is. “You don’t want to know,” the others always cryptically warn her. But Mr. Mustache ultimately throws Snackman in the SHU. But in this version of Litchfield the SHU really is a giant shoe that Snackman is thrown into.
Sure, Sesame Street is a kid’s show. But they’ve created smart, funny parodies before to keep the adults watching with their kids entertained. They’ve done Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Mad Men, True Blood, and more. And there’s just something cute, endearing, and just plain hilarious about seeing our favorite shows get the Sesame Street treatment.
