Riverdale’s creator recently tweeted a picture of the season 2, episode 1 script, which means we might get answers sooner than we hoped.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, showrunner of The CW’s Riverdale, tweeted a picture of the first season 2 script, “Chapter 14: A Kiss Before Dying,” on May 22nd. Aguirre-Sacasa, who has writing credits on Glee and Supergirl, is also the CCO of Archie Comics, the basis for the show. Riverdale‘s high ratings prompted The CW to give it an early renewal on March 7, before half of the first season had even aired.
Following in the tradition of recently-revived Twin Peaks, Riverdale is a show about a murder in a small town, featuring the all-American cast of characters found in the famous Archie Comics: Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), his friend Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), rich girl Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), and the perpetually wacky, now hard-boiled, narrator “Jughead” Jones (Cole Sprouse). At the end of season 1, Jason’s true killer is revealed, but all of Riverdale’s secrets are far from exposed. Namely: who shot Fred?
What can we make of “A Kiss Before Dying,” and its chilling spilled milkshake? Given the cliffhanger the first season left us with, this new chapter title may mean that Archie must watch his father die after being shot by an unknown assailant. Perhaps, with the mystery of Jason Blossom’s murder solved, Archie must now solve who is responsible for shooting Fred?
I have no doubt that season 2 will do what all great dark shows do in their second year: get darker. No doubt the released criminal mastermind Hiram Lodge will affect all of Riverdale with his presence, and if Fred really does die, then Archie must deal with the death of his father, which means a promising season 2.
