Saturday Night Live season 42, episode 20 Melissa McCarthy recap

We’re in luck because there was a new Saturday Night Live on and this week, we have Melissa McCarthy hosting with musical guest HAIM.

Last week, Saturday Night Live had one of the greatest episodes the show has seen in quite some time. This week, it was quite the downhill fall. We’re looking at every sketch and talking all things Melissa McCarthy, HAIM, and Saturday Night Live.

Cold Open

Lester Holt interviewed Trump this week, so that means that Michael Che and Alec Baldwin had to take it on. And really, we’re glad they did. It was just zinger after zinger. From Trump calling Lester Holt every other famous African-American man’s name other than Lester to them tearing apart everything that happened this week, it was a good start to the episode.

“Did I get him? Is it over? No? I didn’t? Nothing matters anymore?”

Opening Monologue

If you have a good relationship with your mom, this was a great opening monologue. It was just cute. It was Melissa McCarthy taking Joan, an audience member, through the backstage area. Really, that was pretty much the entire monologue.

But it was her fifth time and it is Mother’s Day weekend, so it worked.

Just Desserts!

This was just an excuse to throw pies in Melissa McCarthy’s face and it worked. It was dumb funny and just continued to show Melissa getting a whipped cream pie to the face. That was it. Nothing else of importance happened really.

Alexa

Do your parents have an “Alexa” and constantly call and ask you how to use it? No? Just me? Well, this sketch makes me and my mom feel less alone. Alexa is a wonderful tool. The problem is that older people don’t realize you can’t just yell any name at her.

It was a nice little digital short that had us laughing because really, who hasn’t had to deal with this with our parents and grandparents?

White House Press Briefing

We were worried we wouldn’t get Sean Spicer, but we got extra Spicer and extra Trump! And my new favorite couple: Sean Spicer and Donald Trump. Basically, it was a press briefing where Sean realized that Trump might be lying to him.

So he takes his podium to New York City to talk to Trump, and eventually, the two start making out. No really, Alec Baldwin as Trump and Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer started making out. It was perfect.

HAIM

I truly loved their performance. HAIM was great and it just looked like they were having so much fun. And their new songs were great to listen to. “Want You Back” is definitely going to be a summer jam and the girls looked amazing on the stage!

“Give Me Just a Little of Your Love” was their second performance and from Este’s famous facial expressions to a generally fun performance, it was a nice second song for the girls.

Weekend Update

“Most of us think this every week but this week was crazy.” Well, this Weekend Update tore apart Trump and the Comey firing. And pretty much stayed on the Trump bandwagon the entire time. There was a brief break with Pete Davidson talking about his sobriety and going to a rehab where he could pet a horse.

But other than that, it was pretty much all about Trump and was one of the better Weekend Updates.

Women in Film

Debette and Gaye teach Lupita Nyong’o and Marion Cotillard about what it was like to be a star in their day.  It wasn’t the greatest sketch that ever happened on the show but it was fine. Just felt more like a filler sketch than anything else.

The problem with most of the episode was that it felt like they were just trying to fill their time slot and this was definitely one of those sketches.

Leslie and Kyle

Saturday Night Live has a wonderful running gag where Leslie Jones and Kyle Mooney are in love with each other. This time, they’re married with a son named Lorne, and Kyle ends up shooting Colin in the leg.

Again, it just felt like they were trying to fill the hour and a half of the show with this sketch. Maybe it’s because last week was so good, this week just kind of dragged.

Birthday Party

Embrace your animal. Or don’t, I don’t know.

Again, this episode just feels strange. Last week, there was perfect sketch after perfect sketch and you could rewatch it over and over again. I don’t see anyone rewatching this episode other than the Sean Spicer sketch.

Company Logo

When this sketch started, I suddenly realized why this episode was kind of boring: the lack of Beck Bennett. So this sketch ended the show on a high because Beck was in it. “Feast your ass on this.” Basically, Beck is a graphic designer who is creating a logo for Lighthouse pictures.

What Lighthouse doesn’t like is Donna, the woman going through a rough time who is in every logo he shows. It was a nice wrap-up but the shining moment came when Steve Martin appeared.
