Chris Pine is my favorite actor and has been for quite some time now so when it was announced that he was hosting SNL, I had to go. Here’s my story.
My love of Chris Pine started innocently enough. I was a 13 year old girl who went to the movies with her best friends to see the Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement and then I was a goner. Now throughout the years I’ve loved him and his work and to this day, I think he’s one of the best actors we have around.
Flash forward to 2017 and you’ll see why I camped outside in a monsoon for tickets to see him. Back in April, I was informed that Chris Pine would host Saturday Night Live. Not just from my friends and family but also from half the internet. So when May 5 rolled around, I knew I had to sleep on the streets of New York to get a ticket. Unlucky for me, it was raining terribly that day. So at 3 p.m, I took my sleeping bag and sign outside and made camp on 48th street. I was prepared to wait however long to get a ticket.
They had them out at 7 in the morning on Saturday so my friend and I had to somehow not drown throughout the night. We managed (with the help of 2 boxes of Hefty trash bags and sheer dumb luck) and ended up being 9 and 10 in line for the live show.
The Hotel
So my friend came into town and was staying at this super nice hotel I’m obsessed with. I’m leaving out the name because it’s one where all the celebrities stay and you all don’t need to go there looking for your faves.
So anyway, we were in the lobby and I was working on articles when I heard some people talking about their friend and Saturday Night Live. I thought to myself “oh no, could this be? Could I actually be in the hotel with Chris Pine?”
Well, that was exactly the case. He came bounding down into the lobby and I had to pretend to look busy on my laptop to keep from crying. When he left his friends and was heading out, I thought quickly and called out to him.
What I didn’t expect was this puppy of a man to be so excited that I said “Hey Chris” or to talk to me. But he did and I said “I actually just slept outside for tickets to your show tonight so, break a leg.”
Chris then stared at me with those eyes of pure bliss and said “oh my god you’re so sweet thank you so much” and I think in that moment, I died.
The Live Show
So surprise, I got in! It was amazing. I’ve been to Saturday Night Live before so I was used to what happens. I knew there were moments when you can’t see certain sketches and that you’re still kind of just watching it on a television screen without the ability of making witty tweets about it.
But this show was different. It was perfect for me. For those who don’t know, I’m a woman of many interests. Celebrities, movies, theater; I like pretty much anything and everything. So when Chris Pine started the show with a Billy Joel number set to “Uptown Girl”, I was already sold.
Then a Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? sketch came on and I thought “huh, weird, I love that show.” And it was even weirder since I had made a joke about Kellyanne Conway as Carmen Sandiego at the Inauguration.
But I let it go and continued on. Then a RuPaul’s Drag Race sketch started and again, I thought it was weird since it is one of my favorite shows and my favorite actor. But what really got me was the last sketch of the evening.
Couples Game Night
You might not get this sketch and that’s fine. I don’t know who would love it other than me and like 4 of my friends. Why? Because they’re very clearly singing “We Do Not Belong Together” from Sunday in the Park with George but that’s such a deep cut that who would even really get it except theater nerds?
Here is the song for reference:
So imagine me, who sat outside in a hat from Sunday in the Park with George that said “Look I made a hat” in the rain for tickets to this show, watching this sketch. Here is photographic evidence of the hat:
Honestly, I don’t know who went onto my Twitter account and found all the things I love and added them to a Chris Pine Saturday Night Live but thank you.
Is this Heaven?
So basically, I’ve died and gone into the after life because that’s the only way any of this makes sense. It was wonderful and perfect.

If you have the change to see your fave in person, do it. It will change your life. Now I just need to actually speak to Chris Pine and not dissolve into a shaking mess afterwards.
