5 Hosts The World Deserves for Oscars 2018

facebooktwitterreddit

Jimmy Kimmel did a fine job as the Oscars host last night, but we have some ideas about who we’d like to see for next year’s ceremonies.

Some Oscar hosts have gone down in history as making the awards ceremony the “it” show of the season. Some, on the other hand, have faded into memory, or worse, crashed and burned so that we’ll never forget. It’s no easy task, and some don’t always live up to the challenge – but did anyone think hosting the Oscars would be exactly easy stuff?

Jimmy Kimmel, host of last night’s 89th Annual Academy Awards, wasn’t the worst of them, but we don’t necessarily think he ranks with the best of them, either. (Sorry, Jim.) But we know it’s hard to live up to such great hosts as Ellen DeGeneres, Neil Patrick Harris, Chris Rock or Jon Stewart. It’s a tough gig. We’ll give him that.

Now that 2017 is done and over with – and we’re mostly sure we know who the real winner of Best Picture is at this point – it’s time to look forward. It’s never too soon to start planning ahead, right?

Here are our picks for 5 Oscar Hosts The World Deserves for next year.

5. Leslie Jones

I don’t think I’m alone in saying that Leslie Jones’ livetweets and reactions during last year’s summer Olympics were, well, everything. We’ve laughed so hard we’ve cried during any one of her memorable SNL skits, and we’ve rallied behind her when the world has been ugly to her. She can be serious, she can be hilarious, and she can be very real. She’s got the perfect balance and sense of humor to keep us entertained the whole night – which has never clocked in as short as they say it will.

4. Melissa McCarthy

Legendary funnywoman Melissa McCarthy has really blessed us these past 10 years. We started our McCarthy love affair with Sookie from Gilmore Girls, and I’m not sure there was ever any turning back. Her SNL appearances are always gold. Her talk show appearances are always gems, and her movies are riotously hilarious. She’d pack the punches and still feel like our best friend at the end of the night, so really, who wouldn’t want to see her up there hosting the biggest awards show of the year? Give us Melissa!

*Bonus points if some or all of the night is performed with Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer.

3. James Corden

Listen here, James Corden was a delight as this year’s host of the Tony Awards and I need more. He may be the most underrated late night man, and I for one would not complain if he hosts everything from now on. He’s charming, he knows how to make fun of himself and everyone, and Carpool Karaoke is a national treasure and we all know it. Corden would have us all holding our stomachs in laughter, and to be very honest, I’m pretty sure we never would have had a Best Picture mix-up under his leadership. He’s too pure, too good.

2. Samantha Bee

She’s loud, she’s hilarious, she’s the Queen of Late Night and she gives not a care in the world. Samantha Bee doesn’t beat around the bush, she’s in your face, and we love her. Give her the hosting duties and we’ll never go hungry again — something like that. She’s unapologetic, she’s tough and punchy, but mostly, we just need another badass lady up on that stage taking on the duty of Master of Ceremonies. She’s got the chops. Just hand her the microphone, already. She’s got the rest covered.

1. Lin-Manuel Miranda

Find me one person in this world not in love with Lin-Manuel Miranda, and I’ll show you all the pigs flying. The Hamilton creator, and original stage Alexander Hamilton himself, has stolen everyone’s hearts, young and old, since 2015 when the theater world and really just the world changed as we know it with the debut of Hamilton on Broadway.

But more than talented, he’s funny (please refer to his Hamilton themed episode of Drunk History for reference). It’s scientifically proven at this point that there’s nothing he can’t do well – he may just be a God. And don’t we deserve that for our next Oscars host? A few musical numbers, a lot of jokes, some more socially inspirational and moving speeches — history has its eyes on him, and the people have spoken.

Give us Lin!
