Jim and Pam – The Office

The Setup

The best fictional proposals are always the result of lots and lots (and lots) of buildup. Which is part of why Jim and Pam have one of the best. We watched Jim and Pam’s relationship grow for years, which is why it was so satisfying when they finally started dating.

But it was the proposal that said more about them than anything else. Jim had been planning to propose to Pam for weeks, with her full knowledge. He had even ordered fireworks for the occasion, but the perfect moment was hijacked, unwittingly, by Andy, who proposed to Angela because the moment felt right.

The Moment

For several episodes, Jim tried to think of a similar grand gesture, especially after Pam went to New York for months for art school. But instead, after weeks of long distance, Jim and Pam casually agree to meet up for lunch at a convenience store halfway between New York and Scranton. And that’s when, outside in the rain, Jim got down on one knee and proposed to Pam.

The best part about this one is the mundaneness of it. The Office itself has always been about normal people, their normal lives, and how beautiful and wonderful that is. Jim proposed to Pam on a regular day. There were no fireworks or grand gestures – they didn’t need any. They love each other just as much on this normal, boring day as on every exciting, special day. And that’s what makes it so beautiful.
