Feud: Bette and Joan needed to either take things seriously or embrace the over-the-top nature of its main characters. It seems like we’ll get the latter.
Let’s just get this out of the way: Bette Davis and Joan Crawford really, really did not like each other. We’re talking Davis reportedly saying that the best time she ever had with Crawford was pushing her down some stairs for the movie they starred in together, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Seeing some potential there, Ryan Murphy’s new FX anthology series, Feud, will start out with none other than the filming of Baby Jane and the rivalry of its two stars.
New photos (with a tip of the hat and a chuckle for Vulture’s commentary) have since emerged.
We’ll let them speak for themselves, at least at first.
Just that first photo alone, with Jessica Lange as Joan Crawford holding out her hand to Susan Sarandon’s Bette Davis, basically says it all, doesn’t it? We all know that the offered hand probably doesn’t come with anything good behind it. (Also, did they get Crawford’s eyebrows right or what?)
The second photo, which lets Sarandon take the spotlight, shows that Davis wasn’t the innocent party in this war either. That photo has nothing but attitude. See also the above report that Davis really did like pushing Crawford down the stairs.
In the third photo, we have a shot set behind the scenes of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? The plot of the film has Crawford’s character, Blanche Hudson, in a wheelchair after a mysterious accident that may or may not have involved her sister, Davis’ Baby Jane, who was a child star. Blanche, meanwhile, later starred in films. Now older, the two live in a house where Baby Jane rules the roost, and not in a good way.
If nothing else, this series will be fun just to watch Sarandon and Lange trade barbs in character.
