George R. R. Martin is Pulling for Atlanta in the Super Bowl

Game of Thrones writer and NFL Football fanatic George R. R. Martin has weighed in who he thinks will win Super Bowl LI.

Famed Game of Thrones author, and New York Giants super fan George R. R. Martin is notorious for writing at length on his LiveJournal blog (that’s not quite a blog) about NFL football. So much so that fans have criticized the football season for slowing down Martin from finishing the much-anticipated Winds of Winter. His beloved team, the New York Giants, managed to make it into the Wild Card Round but failed to beat the Green Bay Packers to move on to the Playoff Divisional Round.

George R. R. Martin took to LiveJournal after the last playoff games and had some hot takes.

"I was hoping that this week’s conference championships would give us more exciting contests, but no such luck. The Falcons ripped right through Green Bay and the Patriots obliterated the Steelers. Neither contest was even remotely competitive."

He’s not wrong. Both games were blowouts and boring. But it looks like he’s picked who he’s rooting for in the Super Bowl. Like a real football fan, Martin is going to stay loyal to the National Football Conference (NFC) and pick the Atlanta Falcons to win it all.

"Anyway, we have our SuperBowl: Patriots against Falcons.Nothing much to say but GO FALCONS."

It’s not surprising Martin picked the Falcons, considering the New England Patriots and the Giants are bitter rivals. This is great news for Falcons fans though, who have only had one Super Bowl appearance, which was back in 1999. Regrettably, they got stomped by the defending champions Denver Broncos that year but this season seems to favor Atlanta.

Whoever the winner is I’m sure Martin will have much to say on the subject. But I think most fans of his are hoping after the Super Bowl he can get back to work on Winds of Winter.

Super Bowl LI will be televised on the FOX Network Sunday, February 5, 2017, at 6:30ET. Let’s all hope George R. R. Martin is right, and the Atlanta Falcons can score a win–or the Patriots might find themselves invited over for dinner.
