The American Music Awards showcased music’s finest tonight in Los Angeles so I’m bringing you all the shocking moments that you need to know about.

The 44th Annual American Music Awards, once again, tried to out shine years prior. Performances from Fifth Harmony, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, John Legend, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, and The Chainsmokers filled the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles tonight. Hosted by Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharaoh, it was a night to celebrate the music of 2016, and I’m bringing you the 6 “OMG” moments from it.

6. Twenty One Pilots won their first AMA and their speech said it all.

Twenty One Pilots, an American musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, took home their first AMA this year- “Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group.” This win kick-started the night and Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun’s thank you speech reminded us all why we gather every year to celebrate music.

I know a lot of artiest get up here and talk about the fans, but we really want to cut through the noise, and say to our fans, ‘you guys changed our lives. I don’t know why you guys weren’t invited. But the next best thing, you sent us in your place, and we’re honored to represent you guys,” Joseph says. “To our fans- thank you SO much. And to everyone else- who cares, really.

I think this began the night on such a high note. These are two guys who are new to fame, incredibly appreciative to the people who’ve put them there (their fans), and gracious enough to revolve their entire thank you speech around them. And that is what this industry is built off of.

5. Drake wins “Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album” and congratulates Nina Dobrev in his acceptance speech.

This is why I love this industry, people!! Nina Dobrev and Julianne Hough present “Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album,” which of course, went to Drake. He casually strolls up to the stage to accept his award, because we all know this ain’t his first rodeo, and instead of reciting a rehearsed thank you speech, he CONGRATULATES NINA DOBREV ON ALL HER SUCCESS. Heart eyes.

The two were on Degrassi years ago and grew up in the industry together So he gets on stage and mentions how he continues to be in awe over how successful she’s become. Talk about a gentlemen. These are the stories I live for-artists supporting artists, putting another’s success over their own. Bravo, Drake!

4. One Direction is like, really over.

Zayn Malik won “New Artist of the Year.”

So yeah…

This means One Direction is officially over.

Like, really over.

3. Prince’s sister delivers emotional speech.

“Purple Rain” won “Top Soundtrack” for the third time in AMAs history. Prince’s sister, through a roller coaster of emotion, gave an acceptance speech for the award that had the audience in tears by the end.

He is still one of the world’s most respected and loved artists,” she says proudly. “In the words of Prince, ‘With love, honor, and respect for every living thing in the universe, separation ceases. and we all become one being, singing one song.'”

2. The Chainsmokers win their first AMA. Duh.

Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall are the American DJ duo known as The Chainsmokers. They’ve had previous singles that have gotten in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 like “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down,” but it wasn’t until “Closer” came out this year that they saw a number-one single on the chart. This song put this band on the map and completely stole the music scene for months this year.

The song, featuring vocals from Halsey, stayed at the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks. So it was no surprise that they won their first AMA- “Favorite EDM Artist.” They won this over Calvin Harris and Major Lazer.

The Chainsmokers of course, preformed “Closer” with Halsey during the show and it was everything I’d hoped for, and MORE.

Tell me that wasn’t the most incredible thing you’ve ever seen.

Which brings me to my #1 “OMG” moment of the night.

1. I’m in love with Halsey.

Okay, but who isn’t?

Halsey is new to the music industry. She weaseled her way in after posting a parody to Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” on her tumblr account. In 2014, she released a song on Soundcloud, which gained huge attention and after that, she signed to a record label. Now, her guest vocals on The Chainsmokers single “Closer” earned her way onto the AMA’s to perform.

The performance was magic, and although I haven’t listened to Halsey as much as I care to admit, I’m 100% committed to now, earning my love for her this #1 OMG moment from the AMA’s. It’s rare when you find an artist whose perfect voice on a record matches their perfect voice singing live. And Halsey is one of those artists.

Same, AMAs official Twitter account. Same.
