Dancing with the Stars Season 23: Week 3 Results

Six couples in jeopardy for results show twice the length of Night 1 this week.

Night two of this odd week, and some things are anticipated. Tom opens the night by presenting Kym Johnson, filling in for Erin Andrews, who had a death in the family. And they promised us judge’s commentary. Though what we get isn’t quite what we expected. The only organized commentary is a short summing up. Otherwise, for each dance, we get an extended fluff, then whatever the judges mics picked up during the dance themselves. Well, that’s less boring, anyway. There are some other fun bits of the first hour, such as when Gleb Savchenko’ wet underwear footage is followed up by more photos with censoring mirror balls.

The second hour starts with a number from the female pros. Then we start the elimination with two of the couples out on stage first. Marilu & Derek are the first of the six to be called safe. Amber & Maks are in jeopardy. Then we have proper filler:

  • Florida Georgia Line do a performance where the accompaniment includes clips of Jenna Johnson & Keo Motsepe dancing on a beach! There’s still too little of them dancing during the song, though.
  • Mandatory celebrities talking about how this is harder than they thought.
  • Fitz and the Tantrums perform their hit “Hands Clap.” There’s a group of dancers accompanying them. There’s not any attempt to promote the episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that’s airing right after this, which is kind of disappointing.

Next two couples out are Babyface & Allison and Rick & Emma. We start uneasily thinking about whether Babyface is going to get enough votes, or whether we’re about to get stuck with Rick & Emma for another week…but no, Babyface & Allison turn out to be safe, while Rick & Emma are in jeopardy.

  • Florida Georgia Line return to the stage to perform their big hit “Cruise.” Lindsay Arnold & Gleb are great to watch when they’re on the floor in accompaniment.
  • The Chmerkovskiy brothers do a number from their tour. It includes them not only dancing brilliantly, but trying their hand at comedy, bringing one lucky woman from the audience onto the floor for a lapdance, and finally bringing a crowd into the floor. Oh, and they show their bare chests, of course.

We get an announcement besides results: Len is going to be away for a couple of weeks. He’ll be at home in Britain doing Strictly Come Dancing. No word on whether there’ll be a guest fourth judge or not.

  • Then he goes “behind the scenes” where they’re preparing a filler number. He takes charge of it, and we lead into said number. Six dancers dance to “Straight to Memphis,” and it’s one of the night’s better numbers. Well done, Len!

The backstage clips before the final two clips include everyone speaking nicely to Terra. Len even says had she gone up against anyone else she would’ve won immunity. Yet when it comes time to announce, it’s Ryan & Cheryl who are safe. She & Sasha remain in jeopardy.

Thankfully it doesn’t last long. The two of them line up with Amber & Maks and Rick & Emma, and Tom calls them safe next. So now we have a not so nice but unfairly maligned woman, up against an embarrassing Republican politician. Which one will America reject?

Thankfully Rick & Emma. Tom drags him down to the floor for a final interview, reminding him this is live, like a debate. He assures everyone he’ll be fine for his daughter’s wedding. Also advocates for veteran’s causes. Best thing he’s done on this dance floor, really.

Next week is Cirque du Soleil week! That sounds like loads of fun. At least provided nobody ends up seriously injured. Or more injured than they are already. We’ll return to the ballroom next Monday at 8.
