Hilary Swank has finally made her debut appearance in Yellowjackets during "A Normal, Boring Life" and confirmed the fan theory that she would be playing the adult counterpart to Melissa, known for her constantly present hat and supposedly short-lived relationship with Shauna. Only stepping into her own in the Wilderness timeline in season three, Melissa has been a breakout supporting character, joining in on Shauna's growing violence and emotional spiral. When Hilary Swank steps into the role as an adult, it only confirms the comical chaos that Melissa, while getting the normal and boring life she wanted, is far from the normal and boring person she wants to be.
In a twist of fate, Melissa did survive the Wilderness, only to fake her death after the group arrived home under the realization that the camaraderie and shared trauma of the group did not extend to her. While it is not entirely clear what the surviving Yellowjackets did once arriving home, Melissa apparently determined that she did not want to risk becoming on the wrong end of it and left to start a new life, which included changing her name. Still, Melissa did not veer too far from the path, as she fell in love and married Alex, the biological daughter of Hannah, the frog scientist who the Yellowjackets in the Wilderness timeline eventually killed. Knowingly getting married to the daughter of the woman you killed under a fake name is not necessarily the "normal" existence that Melissa argues it is.
Otherwise, Melanie Lynskey and Hilary Swank offer a captivating and riveting reunion between Shauna and Melissa as Yellowjackets leans into the messy humor of their Wilderness dynamic, insisting that they both hold knives as they discuss Melissa's backstory and how she ended up married to Alex, as well as Shauna questioning if Melissa truly is after Shauna. As an adult, Shauna has been unraveling all season, and "A Normal, Boring Life" suggests the possibility that there is a completely reasonable explanation for all of the cumulatively suspicious things that have been occurring in Shauna's life lately. Still, Shauna is not interested in listening, even as Callie and Jeff elsewhere determine that they are done following Shauna's lead as she refuses to let them in on any of the secrets she continues to hold.
Shauna's arc in both timelines is one of the most noticeable, as adult Shauna spirals down a mental state of growing paranoia while her Wilderness counterpart thrives on a claim for power and violence. Season three shifts the adult counterparts around this season as Taissa and her other personality contemplate violence to save Van while Misty somehow becomes the level-headed member of the group following two seasons of kidnappings and murders. Meanwhile, the Wilderness storylines in season three have been the strongest tether to explaining the character developments of adult Shauna's growing short fuse and the explanation of adult Natalie's spiral into guilt and grief. The underlying conflict between Natalie and Shauna, which has never quite reached a physical brawl, continues to grow and potentially reach a head as Shauna joins Lottie's decision to stay in the Wilderness rather than allow Hannah and Kodiack to help rescue the remaining survivors.
Lottie, Shauna, and Taissa argue that going with Hannah and Kodiack feels wrong, and of course, there is the question of how the Yellowjackets could possibly ensure that neither would reveal seeing Coach Ben's severed head. The only real way to make sure that their Wilderness activities are never discovered is to make sure Kodiack and Hannah are dead, and it remains to be seen how much longer either will last with the remaining survivors who have either grown into a new version of themselves in the Wilderness or worry about what a returning future may look like if Hannah and Kodiack were to immediately reveal what the group was really up to out there. The pilot episode of Yellowjackets, which showed the group hunting in winter, has already confirmed that they do not simply leave with Kodiack and Hannah. Yet, it is still uncertain how long Hannah and Kodiack last with the rest of the group.
"A Normal, Boring Life" tests the main characters in various ways, from seeing how long it takes adult Shauna to revert back to her most dangerous mindset to seeing how far Taissa is willing to go to save Van to questioning how Shauna, Lottie, and Taissa convince Natalie and the rest of the survivors to stay in the Wilderness. Melissa's adult counterpart has to eventually reunite with Misty, Taissa, and Van, and Lottie's murder also needs to be solved as well. Every time the adult timeline keeps the adults together, it makes for better episodes and storylines. Meanwhile, things are coming to a head in the Wilderness timeline as winter approaches once again, and it can finally be determined if season three ends with rescue or if there is another plot twist up the show's sleeve.
