Even people who might not be able to pronounce, let alone know, what the phrase "voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir” means, know the song reference. From the first snap till the theater lights go up, the excitement that is Moulin Rouge The Musical keeps people engaged with all the action. No one will fall asleep during this performance, but they might have vivid dreams when their head eventually hits the pillow.

The stage adaption of the Baz Luhrmann’s classic movie had much buzz when it premiered on Broadway. Earning numerous awards, the well-known trope, visually compelling sets, and familiar music were a big draw. While the jukebox musical came with an expectation of an entertaining night of theater, it is the emotional moments that have people listening not just humming along.

Currently on a National Tour with a stop at Dr Phillips Center in Orlando, this production of Moulin Rouge The Musical sets the tone of the night early. Even as actors saunter around the stage before the orchestra plays the first note, the audience feels the draw of the Bohemian lifestyle. It might be a little dark or seedy, but no one can look away. They want to be welcomed by the artists even if they retreat to their comfortable lives at the end of the night.

The heart of the show is Christian (played by Christian Douglas). Although far from the American in Paris classic, he has that hope and optimism that every artist needs. Even though love might slip from his grasp, the willingness to take that risk endears him to the audience.

Douglas’ sublime voice is what the lead role needs. In a way, he is seductive. Some people might not be drawn to that good guy persona, but it is the range that he captures which keeps all eyes on him, even with so many places to look on stage. Everyone wants him to have the happily ever after moment, even if it might be fleeting.

In the other lead, Satine (played Gabrielle McClinton) holds the audience in her hand. From her first appearance as the Sparkling Diamond to her triumphant final performance, everyone wants her to rise to greatness. What McClinton does well is capture that vulnerability. Her big, belting moments can be felt throughout the theater, but it is the quieter moments that have the audience sitting on the edge of their seats.

The glue to the whole production is Harold Zidler (played by Robert Petkoff). At first blush, the audience might be guarded to step into his theater world, but the quick turn of a phrase and a little razzle dazzle captivates even the biggest skeptic. By the end of the night, everyone wishes that they would have a place in this company.

Overall, the Moulin Rouge The Musical National Touring Company captures the vibrancy, grittiness, and jubilation of the Parisian tale. There can be moments where the splicing of popular song after song can be a little confusing, but that familiar beat allows everyone to focus on what really matters in this performance. It is about the people, the connection, and the willingness to give your heart to someone who is willing to hold it dear.

Moulin Rouge The Musical might focus on the four ideals of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, but it is more than just words. It is the choice to act on those concepts which lead to a fulfilled life. Whether or not people “can-can” into the night remains to be seen, but the melody will play on until the sun rises.

Moulin Rouge The Musical plays Dr Phillips Center in Orlando through March 3, 2024. Future stops include Ft. Lauderdale, Charlotte, and more cities across the U.S.
