Elsbeth's guest star of the week format is holding strong as the breakout CBS sitcom jumps into its sophomore season. When audiences come back for the next installment of episodes showing Elsbeth striving to solve various mysteries around New York City,  Tony Award-winner Nathan Lane will be kickstarting the second season as the season premiere's guest star.

Nathan Lane is familiar with this environment, having appeared in many episodes of The Good Wife as Clarke Hayden. Nathan Lane's other work includes his voice work portraying Timon in The Lion King (1994), a recurring guest role in the popular Hulu comedy series Only Murders In The Building, and many more projects.

With season one's main plot line surrounding Elsbeth spying on Captain Wagner out of the way, season two has the opportunity to explore new dynamics between Elsbeth, Wagner, and Kaya. What new mysteries await this trio in New York City? Season one prepared the groundwork for interesting complicated relationships that could transform into strong friendships or found family bonds.

Given how Elsbeth tackled its main mystery in season one, hopefully, season two's extended order of twenty episodes will allow the show and the characters more room to be fleshed out. Subplot mysteries, with more screen time, will be given more room to grow while the episodic formula of the series still encourages interesting mysteries and fun comedy. With an extended order of episodes, that could also mean even more guest stars are on the horizon.

Season one proved that Elsbeth was a brilliant, light-hearted mystery. But, season two has the ability to demonstrate that this show, while successfully continuing its role as a comedy, can also step up its season-long subplots in ways that its freshman run was unable to achieve, given its limited episode count.

Elsbeth will return to CBS with its season two premiere on Thursday, October 17th at 10/9c.
