Before picking up Sweet Obsession, I was nervous as I tend to not have the best luck with m/m romances. While there are some I've enjoyed in the past, the list isn't very long, but with Katee Robert at the helm, I shouldn't have worried.
Robert has given us an incredibly expansive and downright sexy world in the Dark Olympus series, a sentiment she continues to deliver on. If anything, Sweet Obsession lays even more groundwork for the series and its overarching plot.
Since Sweet Obsession is book 8 in the series, there is a larger plot going on that has been woven since Neon Gods. Since this review is going to be spoiler-free, I won't get into details, but how this story played out has me excited for book 9 and what's to come for Olympus and its people.
With that being said, I'd like to thank Sourcebooks Casablanca for sending me an ARC and a finished copy, as I'm a huge Katee Robert fan.
Sweet Obsession takes the Dark Olympus series to new heights.
At the end of Dark Restriant, Katee Robert gave us a preview of what was to come. We knew that this romance would be between Poseidon and Icarus, which was something this author had yet to explore in this series. Despite that, Katee Robert ended up having so invested in this romance and these two characters that I ended up reading this in two sittings.
Without getting into too many details, Poseidon ends up capturing Icarus, and at first, it seems as though Icarus is counting down the days until his death. However, Poseidon ends up being much different than Icarus expected and, frankly, what I was thinking. Very quickly, we find out that these two are more well-suited than either ever imagined.
What I adored most about this book was how KR wrote kink and how it played into the dynamic of their relationship. While kink has been a theme in some of her other stories, it felt even more pivotal in this series. Seeing how Poseidon and Icarus interacted with each other, both in and out of the bedroom, was so interesting. It truly felt like I was watching their relationship play out on a movie screen, which is a testament to Robert's writing.
Aside from the romance, Icarus and Poseidon grew so much individually. There was so much trauma in their pasts, but they worked through it and came together. It was truly beautiful, seeing the two both grow as people and as a couple. The only thing I didn't absolutely love was the pacing towards the end of the book. I wish we would have gotten a little more after what happened in the larger storyline, but maybe it'll make sense when Tender Cruelty is released.
Either way, I adore Katee Robert and this series. I truly cannot wait to see where the series goes next and what they do next. Regardless, I'm a huge fan of this author and know whatever comes next will be incredible.
Sweet Obsession by Katee Robert is out now where books are sold.
