Connie Nielsen's (The Good Wife, Wonder Woman) reprisal of Lucilla for the upcoming Gladiator sequel doesn't necessarily mean her character will finally have the happy ending she so desperately deserves. In fact, we've been quite worried about her character ever since assumptions swirled that she and General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) would be somehow romantically involved.
Our assumptions were true as not only does Pascal play her on-screen husband but from what we've gathered from the official trailers alone, he will be enemy Number 1 for her son, Lucius (the child of Maximus from the previous film). What's worse is the big battle between both men continues to be one of the biggest and most anticipated scenes in the entire film.
How could Lucilla have such rotten luck? Will she lose both husband and son?
Thankfully off-screen, Nielsen's story is another matter altogether. She managed to celebrate her birthday while filming Gladiator II in one of the best ways possible thanks to her co-star Pascal.
Nielsen recently spoke about the gesture to Marie Claire Australia detailing how "Pedro insisted on like sitting up this beautiful lunch for me. So, we got a boat and we went out sailing the whole day, we went swimming in these caves off of Malta and it was just magical. All of us together, was really wonderful.” Would we have expected anything less from the man dominating nearly all aspects of Hollywood in recent years?
Considering Lucilla and General Acacius' relationship, it's safe to say Nielsen and Pascal worked often together with her describing her co-star as, "one of the most charismatic and kind and joyful people." We're very excited to see Lucilla and General Acacius' relationship play out on the big screen later this month, even if we are dreading a tragedy of epic proportions to occur.
We're curious as to your thoughts and predictions for the upcoming film. Be sure to share them in the comments below!
Gladiator II arrives in theaters on November 22.
