Throughout its first season, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage has worked to figure out how to keep its ties to Young Sheldon but still branch out into its own series. The overall tone of the show has grown to connect more to comedy as the first season got further from the remaining grief that Georgie had surrounding his father's death. There are still some tweaks that the series needs to work out, such as creating a more consistent comical tone when Young Sheldon's characters are not around for guest star appearances. However, the show has improved from its early episodes as the season finale finally leans more into Georgie and Mandy's individual professions.

When it comes to the main leads, Emily Osment's performance as Mandy helps carry the show's more comical elements. Coming off of being a series regular in other successful multi-cam sitcoms such as Hannah Montana and Young and Hungry, Emily Osment leans into the familiar territory of playing to the audience and leaning into live reactions. Meanwhile, Dougie Baldwin, who portrays Mandy's brother, Connor, is a breakout supporting character who is severely underused in season one. Connor is a unique addition to the show's line-up who gained a stronger personality as the season went on. An originally unlikely, enjoyable character, the biggest problem that Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage had with Connor was that the series did not utilize him enough. While Montana Jordan still keeps Georgie's personality consistent from Young Sheldon, the effect of Young Sheldon's narrative tone in its final seasons prevent Georgie from really become a sitcom standout, as Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage needs to figure out in its second season how to allow him to still feel grounded but lean more into a comical character.

As a whole, Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage struggled immensely with its tone, trying to dip its toe further into comedy while still being held back by a more dramatic or general narrative. It tries to be funnier than Young Sheldon was in its final seasons, but never reaches the laugh-out-loud comical stylings of The Big Bang Theory. Yet, while Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage may need to work on its humor, there are elements of the series that do work in its favor. The show does a decent job of playing up the in-law battles between Audrey McAllister and Mary Cooper, and the season one finale's decision to finally return Mandy to working full time as a weather anchor sets up a potential stronger individual foundation for Mandy in season two. Meanwhile, setting up Georgie and Ruben as the new owners of the auto tire store helps in preparing Georgie's future as the successful owner of Doctor Tire that he grows up to become in The Big Bang Theory.

Leaning more heavily into their individual professional lives creates more opportunities to take the show away from the main house and see each character interacting with their work environment, especially Mandy, whose new job sets up a significant amount of potential humor given the chance to introduce new characters as well as storylines for Mandy in a professional atmosphere. For as many Young Sheldon guest stars that Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage included, Sheldon Cooper remained absent, a decision that works in favor of Georgie's reference in The Big Bang Theory that he was left to keep the family together following George's death, while Sheldon went on about his life. However, seeing as the character of Sheldon Cooper worked as a sitcom lead for twelve years, perhaps bringing the character back could revive some of those comical elements. Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage may have started to figure out the type of show it wants to be, but it still has a long way to go.
