Sophie Will Never Reveal How She Met The Father

Sophie Tompkins’ journey has come to an end as Hulu has canceled How I Met Your Father after two seasons. Unfortunately, How I Met Your Father struggled with various issues, from not being able to find its rhythm as a show to the constant comparisons it had to How I Met Your Mother. 

Humor is subjective, but How I Met Your Father never managed to find a way to make its main ensemble compatible as a successful friend group. The jokes felt either too stunted, too forced, or that the show was trying too hard. It was not working, and the lack of chemistry that came from its central couple, Sophie and Jesse, was certainly not helping bring excitement to the series.

Most of the characters had not developed since the show’s beginning, settling into one-note people without substantial relationships with each other. Some have bigger bonds than others, but How I Met Your Father never committed to giving emotional ties to the characters, their relationships, and their stories.

But, the series did not end without giving a few answers, even if viewers never got to see how the characters got there.

Val and Charlie did end up with a son, which means that at some point in the future from where the duo was when season two concluded, Charlie had changed his mind about children. Sophie and Jesse got back together, bringing an end to their will-they-won’t-they plot line. Sadly, the show’s tease that there may be something more brewing between Sophie and Sid will never come to fruition.

While it is upsetting that the show’s central mystery will never be officially solved, How I Met Your Father had already revealed that Sophie had met her son’s father on the night of the first episode, so at least there were potential possibilities amongst characters the audience had already met.
