Barbie is a contender for the 2024 Oscars

Barbie has officially become the #1 movie of 2023! The Greta Gerwig-directed feature film has made history as the first female-directed film to reach $1 billion at the domestic and international box office.

Fans and critics have praised the flick for its humor and positive messaging. Aside from positive feedback and massive box office earnings, Barbie could also receive some of Hollywood’s top accolades.

Barbie movie is generating Oscar buzz

The nomination announcement for the 2024 Oscars is only a few months away, but speculation is already beginning on who could receive a nod. While Barbie isn’t the typical type of film the Academy recognizes, it could be a surprise contender in next year’s race.

The film’s box-office success and rave reviews could score it a Best Picture nod, meanwhile, Gerwig is a shoo-in for Best Director. Gerwig could face stiff competition from Christopher Nolan, whose film Oppenheimer released the same day as Barbie.

As for the acting nods, the film’s main stars could receive some love from the Academy. Margot Robbie is the leading contender when it comes to the Best Actress award race. This would be Robbie’s third Oscar nomination and second nomination for the Best Actress award.

Ryan Gosling stole the show as Barbie’s sometimes-forgotten boyfriend Ken. His performance could put him in the running for the Best Supporting Actor category.

Another person to keep an eye on in the acting race is America Ferrera. In one of the movie’s pivotal scenes, Ferrera gave an inspiring speech about what it means to be a woman. Ferrera’s speech is considered one of the best parts and might land her a Supporting Actress nomination.

Aside from the directing and acting nominations, the film is favored to receive recognition for its set and costume designs.

The race for the 2024 Oscar nominations is in full swing. Although a lot can change between now and January, Gerwig and Robbie’s passion project could, in fact, make Oscar history.
