Kelly Clarkson is still friends with singer-songwriter Reba McEntire

Singer Kelly Clarkson’s personal life has always been the focus of the tabloids for the past three years. Only a year after assuming the role of daytime talk show host, the American Idol winner and her husband of seven years, Brandon Blackstock announced their divorce in June 2020.

After a nasty battle over custody of their children and financial assets, a settlement was reached, and their divorce was finalized in March 2022. While the divorce has been difficult for everyone, it hasn’t impacted Clarkson’s relationship with her former stepmother-in-law Reba McEntire.

Kelly Clarkson says she and Reba McEntire are still close

Clarkson and McEntire’s friendship has spanned 20 years and goes way back to Clarkson’s American Idol days. After winning the singing competition, Clarkson went on to have a successful musical career and McEntire became her mentor.

The two women became close as they collaborated on musical projects, and McEntire played matchmaker for Clarkson by introducing her to her stepson. Clarkson and Brandon began dating in 2012 and a year later tied the knot in October 2013.

When Clarkson and Brandon divorced, many wondered if this also meant the end of her friendship with McEntire. During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Clarkson told Andy Cohen that her divorce didn’t impact her bond with McEntire.

"“Not at all. We were friends before Brandon and I even got together. As a matter of fact, literally, we were talking before she signed up to The Voice, we were texting each other about that and we text each other all the time.”"

Like Clarkson, McEntire also went through a very public divorce. In 2015, McEntire and her husband Narvel Blackstock split up after 26 years of marriage.

Though both are coming out of unfortunate situations, Clarkson said that their divorces brought her and McEntire closer.

"“I think we’re both women of sound mind that know that life doesn’t work out sometimes. I mean, well, she would know best. It’s literally the same thing. So, yeah, no hard feelings there, just feelings.”"
