With just 13 episodes in this final season of Nancy Drew, there is a lot that needs to be packed into every episode. And in episode 3, “The Danger of the Hopeful Sigil,” one thing we know for sure is that Nancy and Ace are going to be dealing with their curse.

So no matter what else is going on in Horseshoe Bay, for once it looks like Nancy Drew is truly making herself a priority. But this is still our girl detective we are talking about and that means that when other things are going on in town (and we already know a lot is happening with black sludge in the water and people revealing their darkest secrets), it’s definitely up to Nancy and the rest of the Drew Crew to find a way to save the day.

Unsurprisingly, one of the items that Nancy and Ace want to use to break their curse ends up in the wrong hands (George’s sister and her girlfriend) and it’s up to the Drew Crew to stop a demonic entity from killing not only its new human host but also other people in the town. And unfortunately for Nancy, to stop the demonic entity, costs them the “doll” they needed for their ritual.

Nancy Drew has to stop a demon before she can even think of breaking her curse

Honestly, with all of that happening in just the first half of the episode, you already know that this is not going to be an easy watch. Not only do we see the ritual to break the curse fail, but this time Nancy almost dies and it even leads to a revelation for Carson Drew that he is also still grieving the loss of his wife.

It felt like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for Nancy Drew. Not only did their attempts to break the curse fail, but at this point, it seems like Ace has completely lost faith in it ever being broken. Considering he held Nancy in his arms as she almost died, we can’t blame him.

And of course, it makes sense that Carson is adamant that Nancy let go of Ace because it could kill her. There is no way that he wants to lose his daughter, especially since he is still coming to terms with the loss of his wife.

It just feels like this was one of those episodes that was meant to break our hearts and it delivered on the heartbreak, especially if Ace is giving up on attempting to break their curse.
