You season 5 will be the final chapter in Joe Goldberg’s story
Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) story took an unexpected turn at the end of You season 4, and it looks like the character will be back for one last hurrah. Netflix has officially announced You season 5, revealing that the next batch of episodes will serve as the show’s last.
The news of You‘s final season was shared in a Twitter post, which included a short video of Joe repeating his famous phrase: “Hello, you.” And to emphasize the finality of the coming season, the footage ends with something less familiar: “Goodbye, you.”
It doesn’t tell us much about Joe’s future, but we can hope that Badgley’s character will get the fate he deserves. He’s continuously gotten away with killing the women he’s infatuated with. And he takes things to an all-new level throughout You season 4.
After going on a killing spree, tormenting Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), and discovering a split psyche, Joe Goldberg undergoes a major change in the latest episodes. You season 4 concludes with him accepting his darker half — and using Kate Galvin’s (Charlotte Ritchie) wealth to expand his power and influence.
Lead actor Badgley is hoping that his character gets his comeuppance when he returns. During a recent interview with IndieWire, he said, “It feels to me like Joe needs to get what’s coming to him, and now he has further to fall because he has all this power and wealth. But of course, that’s not up to me. I don’t know where it’s going.”
Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo, the new showrunners for You, may have a better idea of where Joe is headed. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the duo will replace Sera Gamble, who has helmed the previous four outings.
With that in mind, it seems fans can expect big changes when You season 5 debuts. And Netflix gave us an idea of when that will happen.
You season 5 will have a 2024 release date
As of this writing, there’s no exact release date for You season 5. However, Netflix’s announcement confirmed that the series will return in 2024. Beyond that, we’ll have to wait for updates about the show’s future.
Fortunately, there’s plenty of reason to watch — and rewatch — You season 4 in the meantime. The newest episodes are currently available to stream on Netflix.
