Now that Henry Cavill is out as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher and Superman in the DCEU, A Song of Ice and Fire fans are speculating once more that he’ll join House of the Dragon for a future season. Here’s what he would look like as a Targaryen in awesome fan art.

It’s been a huge week for 39-year-old actor Henry Cavill, who’s been in the news pretty much every day. In case you missed it, DC boss James Gunn took to Twitter on Wednesday night to confirm that Cavill will not be returning to the role of Superman after all, something that was announced and heavily reported on previously. Cavill himself shared a statement on his Instagram account, and it’s obvious he’s upset by the decision.

It didn’t take long for Game of Thrones fans to start sharing fan art of Cavill, imagining what he would look like in House of the Dragon. This one, as you’ll see below, sees him suiting up in black and red as Aegon the Conquerer. (See an illustration of Aegon I Targaryen here for comparison.)

Check out this awesome art that’s been making its rounds on social media:

A Song of Ice and Fire fans who have read Fire and Blood know Aegon the Conquerer is one of the most influential people in Westerosi history, and certainly the most important in the Targaryen timeline. He was the first king to sit on the Iron Throne after conquering the Seven Kingdoms as his own, and he famously took two wives, his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys. Much of Targaryen history is measured by BC, a.k.a. “Before the Conquest,” and A.C., meaning “After the Conquest.”

Though House of the Dragon begins years and years after Aegon I’s reign, fans are so eager to see that part of history played out on screen and hope perhaps we could get some flashbacks of the character in the HBO spinoff. As of now, however, that seems to just be wishful thinking.

Is Henry Cavill joining House of the Dragon?

Although we know Cavill would absolutely kill it in House of the Dragon, we have no reason to believe at this time that he will join the show. This seems like a fan-casting and nothing more. In November, the Enola Holmes actor joined host Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he shot down the rumor he’d be donning a silver-white wig to play a Targaryen:

"“To be fair, when I was watching House of the Dragon, I was like ‘I feel like a lot of these guys could make really good Witchers,’” Cavill said. “I think it would be cool to be in Westeros, I really do. I don’t think there’s a place for me in there, though.”"

News of Cavill being fired from the DCEU comes less than two months after Netflix announced the actor would be leaving their live-action adaptation of The Witcher, which was been extremely popular for the streamer. After season 3, protagonist Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth. The news shocked fans, and many assumed Cavill left for his return to the role of Superman. The real reason, however, is more likely due to creative differences.

Cavill has been outspoken in the past about not agreeing with the way The Witcher writers were changing the source material, and even once said in an interview that he would stay on the show “as long as we can keep telling great stories which honor [author Andrzej] Sapkowski’s work.” Clearly, that didn’t happen.

Is Henry Cavill returning to The Witcher?

So if you look at it that way, there’s really no reason for Cavill to return to The Witcher. And we just got confirmation he won’t be going back. According to a Deadline article published this week, sources say the actor has no plans to revisit Geralt of Rivia, noting: “Cavill has moved on and already has several new projects brewing so he won’t be away from the screen long.”

And it didn’t take long for the announcement of Cavill’s next project. On Thursday, it was reported that the actor is closing a deal with Amazon to star in and executive produce an upcoming series adaptation of Warhammer 40,000. This will be based on the sci-fi/fantasy game of the same name.

It’s sad to see Cavill no longer attached to his most famous franchises, but rest assured we’ll be seeing much more of him on our screens. And hey, maybe one day he’ll play Aegon the Conquerer. He’d look great in character, after all.
