Motherland: Fort Salem begins to make its conclusion come to the forefront in “Petra’s Favorite Pen.” After Raelle’s return, Scylla is still separated from the group, and Tally and General Alder must continue chasing after the First Song.

The importance of the First Song continues to be understood. It is highly significant and robust, even more so than the witch bomb, but it has yet to be shown exactly how it will be helpful toward what is coming next.

Alder and Tally make the journey for a piece of the First Song. But, it is not an easy one. To secure the song, Tally must sacrifice her sight and exchange it for the song. Sadly, Alder’s fate is unknown after she pushes Tally to safety.

As for Scylla, although Motherland: Fort Salem mentions it has been a week since her capture, a hurt army witch recognizes Raelle, allowing her, Abigail, and Adil to know where to find Scylla and rescue her. Luckily, saving Scylla is relatively quick and easy. However, there is still the matter of the episode’s final minutes to deal with.

Tally, Abigail, Raelle, Scylla, and Adil have been on the run since the season two finale, where it was clear that Camarilla continues to be the witch’s biggest threat. A war between rival groups has been on the horizon for a while. But, “Petra’s Favorite Pen” bring the Unit’s time on the run to an end. Tally, Abigail, Raelle, and Scylla turn themselves in after a group of young army witches are killed in a failed attempt to capture them.

The more people get hurt, the worse it feels to stay in the shadows. However, the group can not continue to cause innocent people to die in attempts to reach them. Their decision to stop running comes after a season of escaping the dangers of the Camarilla and knowing they will be put on trial if they are caught.

As “Petra’s Favorite Pen” comes to a close, the Unit willingly hands themselves to the army. But, it is not without giving the main characters and the audience a piece of hope for the future first.

Abigail sends Adil out to find his sister. But, before he leaves, Adil reminds Abigail that he and his sister consider Abigail to be their family too. Meanwhile, uncertain of what lies ahead, and after having spent far too long apart, Raelle and Scylla take a monumental step in their relationship, getting engaged moments before their capture.

However, there are still uncertainties ahead for the Unit. Tally’s decision to offer her sight in exchange for a song leaves her unable to see into the future, meaning she does not know what comes next for the group. But, Tally is still highly aware of one horrifying reality: Raelle may create a witch bomb that could end the world.

It is unclear what precisely leads to that moment, but given the upcoming trial and growing war between the witches and the Camarilla, several things could be enough to set it off. Granted, there is a way to stop it. The First Song is more powerful than a witch bomb, which may be their only hope to prevent the world’s end.

Motherland: Fort Salem has done a lot of work on developing its expanding world and characters over three seasons. The Unit has grown from strained partnerships into a family. Tally and Abigail’s uncertainty toward Scylla has developed into a legitimate friendship, with Abigail and Tally considering Scylla to be family, along with her being one of them.
