Sibling rivalry is real – sort of. Thor: Love and Thunder just came out in theatres and while this story will not contain spoilers, it will include a piece of Thor trivia you might have been aware of. Was Liam Hemsworth almost cast as Thor? Keep reading to find out.

Chris Hemsworth almost lost his Marvel role as Thor to Liam Hemsworth.

Chris debuted as Thor, God of Thunder, in the 2011 film adaptation. At the time, Liam landed the role of Gale in The Hunger Games one year later. As the brothers are in the same industry, however, it is no surprise that they might audition for the same roles or be considered for similar films.

Wired’s “Autocomplete Interview” video series recently featured Chris Hemsworth and in it, the actor revealed how his casting experience almost ended up in Liam being cast for the role. Being that he was not immediately called back for a second audition, he believed he had no chance of being cast. And according to him, he was right.

Chris’s interview featured a story of when Liam auditioned for the role. According to Chris, Liam was  “great, but a bit young”. Because of the casting concerns, his manager then said,

“Well, he does have an older brother.” Being that Chris had auditioned for the film before his brother, he approached his second interview with a new perspective. He said: “I came back in, re-auditioned a few times, and just had a different attitude. Maybe I had a little more sort of motivation that my little brother got a look in and I hadn’t. I also had done a couple of films in between those two auditions, so I had a bit more experience and confidence in what I was going to do.”

While Chris was ultimately cast for the role, he expressed that he would like Liam to play an alternate version of his character when, or if, a multiverse was explored. He clarified that it was not something that was explored in Thor: Love and Thunder, but that it was something that was part of “multitudes of options” the character and its franchise could take in the future

He said during the interview, “My little brother almost got cast as Thor. He was one of the first people who got right down to the wire on getting the part so, I don’t know, I could cross paths with him. That will be fun,” Chris admitted.

Being that he also expressed that Liam was on the list of top five actors to play Thor, don’t be surprised if his wishes come true in the future!
