The Boys Season 3 trailer shows an even crazier Homelander, who knew that was even possible?
When we last left Homelander (Antony Starr), he had lost his Nazi-lady love, Stormfront (Aya Cash), at the end of The Boys Season 2. Stormfront had most of her limbs charred to bits thanks to Homelander’s son, Ryan (Cameron Crovetti)—who displayed his Homelander-esque powers for the first time, for real—after striking out when he saw his mother, Becca (Shantel VanSanten), being tortured by Stormfront.
Suffice it to say that Homelander has not processed that loss very well on The Boys. We all knew that Homelander was homicidal, but the disturbing events from last season seem to have unhinged the anti-hero/nightmare-type Superman even more.
In the S2 finale, Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) prevented him from seeking his own revenge for Stormfront’s mangling and continuing to menace the women on The Seven Team, including Maeve and Starlight (Erin Moriarty), as well as Maeve’s girlfriend, Elena (Nicola Correia-Damude). If there’s one thing you can say about Homelander, he does not take a loss of control very well.
And the latest Boys Season 3 trailer shows a whole bunch of Homelander’s insane side.
“I’m also just a man who fell in love with the wrong woman,” Homelander explains in the trailer. Again, and again, and again. An unhinged Homelander is never. A. Good. Thing.
“And I am very excited for everyone to meet the real me,” the homicidal supe says to the camera while attending a red carpet event in the series. Believe me, the real Homelander is the last thing anyone needs to be exposed to.”
The Boys S3 trailer features Antony Starr—the breakout performance of the series—up close, demonstrating that no one does crazy eyes better. Any focus on the celebrated New Zealand actor is welcome. Homelander strangling Homelander (aka Doppelganger in disguise) was a truly creepy highlight from Season 2.
“There is something wrong with Homelander. There’s something broken. He’s lost his f**cking mind,” says a concerned Starlight in the promo.
The new trailer also provides insight into another development sure to give Homelander nightmares: his enemy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) ability to temporarily tap into Supe powers “to even the playing field.” Things are really looking down for the leader of The Seven.
The Boys’ S3 trailer also sheds light on the resurrection of Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), who had originally been part of an earlier form of The Seven, Payback (also the name of the first episode of the season, btw), a team of supes who fought during WWII, including Stormfront, incidentally. With Payback, The Boys continues its takedown parody of The Avengers.
The Boys is a singular standout among action-hero comic book interpretations, with a no-holds approach to, well, just about everything, including lots of in-your-face violence, sex, gore, always in ways raunchier than you would expect. It is also an extremely fast-paced, fun, brilliantly written, engaging series that demands your attention and keeps it.
The third season of The Boys will debut on Amazon Prime Video on June 3. Be prepared for anything.
