Avatar: The Way of Water teaser trailer has a big debut
Despite being only 1 minute and 37 seconds long, the teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water has already broken records: a whopping 148.6 million views in just one day. This total eclipses the number of views for the recent Star Wars films, including The Rise of Skywalker (112.4 million views).
The teaser for the Avatar sequel was first shown before the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opened last weekend to quite the haul. Way of Water‘s teaser was officially released globally this past Monday, May 9, and seems to match the footage seen at CinemaCon during Disney’s panel. The teaser seems to be more focused on the beauty and technological innovation behind the film, and less so on the plot, with minimal dialogue.
What you need to know about Avatar: The Way of Water
Way of Water is the sequel to James Cameron’s epic 2009 film, Avatar, which was groundbreaking for its use of technology such as motion capture and 3D filmmaking. The film is set to be released on December 16th of this year and will focus on protagonist Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his new family with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) on the planet Pandora.
Along with returning cast members Worthington, Saldana, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch confirmed newcomers include Edie Falco, Oona Chaplin, Michelle Yeoh, and Kate Winslet. This was Winslet’s first collaboration with Cameron since 1997’s epic, Oscar-winning Titanic. The official synopsis for the Avatar sequel reads: “Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their planet.”
The original Avatar is still the highest-grossing film of all time with a global total of $2.4 billion, so it’s fair to assume that its sequel will do quite well. The producers plan to rerelease the 2009 film in September, which will almost certainly draw a crowd as well, especially from those who were too young when it was first released. There are some concerns that too much time has passed between the original Avatar and its sequel (12 years). Another sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, will soon be released 36 years after its predecessor. Way of Water and the three additional sequels, which were filmed at the same time and cost upwards of $1 billion. If Maverick performs well, this may be a good sign for Way of Water. Hopefully, the franchise’s numerous delays — Way of Water was meant to release in December 2021 — don’t impact its success.
